This restaurant has been in my list to try out in Madurai and I got chance to explore the varieties and the taste for the dinner.
We ordered parotta and mutton briyani first. Parotta came first and the texture was so good and also it tastes good alongside the mutton and chicken gravy that they provided and we were very much excited to have briyani. Meanwhile we ordered pepper chicken and crab omelette.
So we have received our mutton briyani and with lots of expectation we took our first mouthful of the briyani with excitement and got total disappointed with the taste. It tasted nothing. It was just like white rice. It lacks everything that briyani should have. It didn't even have flavour or salt.
At this point we were worried how the other items that we ordered would be. At this point of time, the crab omelette and pepper chicken reached our table.
The pepper chicken was the worst that I had in my upto date experience. It didn't had any taste of pepper in it. Only thing that was satisfying was the curry leaves in the pepper chicken. On the other hand, the crab omelette which tasted same as the normal omelette with just the smell of crab a bit. I don't understand why they are costing a ton on this item which is worth only for the normal Omelette.
Verdict: Go for it if you want to have a mediocre parotta only. Nothing is upto the mark. My first experience with this restaurant has became the last experience as well. Cost and quantity are secondary but we should atleast get tasty food that we buy...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Kumar Mess in Madurai, and I must say that the experience was nothing short of exceptional, especially when it came to their food items. Here's a detailed positive review of three of their standout dishes:
Curry Dosa: Kumar Mess's Curry Dosa is an absolute delight for dosa lovers. The dosa itself is perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, just the way it should be. What sets it apart, however, is the delectable curry they serve it with. The curry is a flavorful blend of spices and vegetables that elevates the dosa to a whole new level. It's aromatic, mildly spicy, and incredibly satisfying. The portion size is generous, making it a hearty and fulfilling meal on its own. This dish is a must-try for anyone visiting Kumar Mess.
Mutton Biryani: Kumar Mess's Mutton Biryani is a true masterpiece. The fragrant aroma that greets you as the server places it on your table is enough to whet your appetite. The biryani is perfectly cooked, with tender pieces of mutton that melt in your mouth. The rice is fluffy and infused with a medley of spices that make every bite burst with flavor. It strikes an excellent balance between spiciness and richness, and the presentation is impeccable. You can tell that a lot of care goes into preparing this biryani, and it...

Had the opportunity to visit one of the most anticipated lunch spots in Madurai — Kumar Mess.
We tried a wide spread: • Mutton Biryani • Nenju Elumbu Roast • Prawn Pepper Roast • Mutton Kari Dosa • Kola Urundai • Ayira Meen Kuzhambu • Chettinad Chicken Gravy • Parotta • Veech Parotta
Here’s how it went: • Mutton Biryani – Just average. Madurai biryani generally doesn’t impress me, and this was no different. • Nenju Elumbu Roast & Prawn Pepper Roast – So good we reordered both! Roasted, caramelized, and packed with flavor. • Kola Urundai – One of the best I’ve ever had. Rich mutton flavor, soft inside, crispy outside. • Mutton Kari Dosa – My first time trying Madurai-style kari dosa — it was much better than what we get in our region. Really enjoyed it. • Parotta – Soft and flaky. • Veech Parotta – Crispy and satisfying. • Ayira Meen Kuzhambu – Balanced and flavorful. Compared to Chandran Mess, it lacked a bit of tanginess, but I liked the homemade-style taste. • Chettinad Chicken Gravy – Only letdown of the meal. Didn’t enjoy this one.
Ambience & Experience: Before visiting, I’d heard mixed reviews — some said it doesn’t taste like the old days. But honestly, I feel this is still a must-visit lunch spot in Madurai.
Pro tip: Skip the biryani. It’s average across most...
