Thoroughly disappointed with the dining experience today. Went in during lunch and checked with the server beforehand if there is fresh catch available. Assuming ban on fishing in the region, expected the server to help in choosing. He mentioned all the fish including marine and fresh water are fresh and bought this morning itself. We trusted the word and ordered Pomfret fry, Prawns fry, Shetka fry and veg meals separately. Shetka, being fresh water fish, was as per expectations though not really fresh. However Prawns and Pomfret were stale, giving off smell and brownish flesh. Being from coastal region and a regular fish eater, I do understand the fish freshness and taste. The curry fish was literally stinking and bitter in taste as it was spoilt one used for cooking. I really wonder what makes them think that customers can be served anything and they can get away with it! I asked the same guy about what was promised and what was served. He had no way to defend and mentioned he will not bill the pomfret which we left in the plate after tasting. Prawns were rubbery, obviously refried and stale. We only went there today after having a very good vegetarian meal experience couple of days ago. However fish meal was a complete disaster. Icing on the cake was a fly in solkadi which we showed the server. He quietly brought a new one, leaving the solkadi with fly on our table itself. My only advise is to avoid this place. If you have to go anyway, order Vegetarian which is worth the money and taste. Fish meal may be good here but in peak season when fish is available abundantly. In the current season you are risking your health and wallet by dining here. 2 stars only for...
Read moreDate: 21 April 2024 The food was lovely (with the exception of the squids). Five of us, we ordered 1 chicken thali and 4 vade kombda. Along with our main meals we also ordered 2 plates of rava fried prawns and a plate of squids. The thali was a traditional Malvan thali and was nice. The vade kombda is actually two dishes: chicken masala gravy and vade(puri) which were both very tasty and filling. The vade (puris) which come 5 in a plate are not your regular puris, they're made of some other ingredients but they taste lovely. The vade are also billed separately from the chicken, keep that in mind in case you wnat to order less. The prawns were nice and crispy and the quantity was worth the price. The squids (mhakul masala) were very 'mehhh' and it didn't feel like squid, felt more like shredded chicken. We ordered a papad on the side, and it's not a regular papad, just a big fryum; unless it comes with your dish, would not advise to order extra. Huge selection of drinks as well (all non alcoholic).
Non Food review: The place is very famous for their thalis, and during food time, waiting times can very well cross 30 mins (we went for lunch). We were fortunate to reach just before the crowd started and got seated immediately. By the time we left plenty of people were waiting to get seated. Once the food was ordered, all our dishes and appetizers came within 15 mins. For those who can't understand or speak Marathi, there's a huge board with pictures of most of the items put up.
Pay Parking is available, less than a min walking, 50 Rs/hour.
There were clean washrooms available when we went, both male and female, as well as...
Read moreThis place deserves a full five rating when it comes to the food and service aspects; not because it is the best tasting seafood that you would have eaten, ever, but because of the soulfulness, that goes into its preparation , the preservation of ingredients, and the manner in which it is served. You will find the owner ( Mr. Gawde) of this restaurant himself frying fish inside the kitchen, and he will happily heed to a patrons call, even if he is busy in his kitchen, and come outside and meet him and have a conversation..Now, that's humility in its most simplest form. Now, it goes without saying, that the sea food here is the freshest I have found in Malvan. Every morning , there is a fresh batch of fish which enters the kitchen, straight from the auction ( lilauu)which is conducted not far away. The portions, be it, fish of any kind: prawns, surmai, crab, pomphrets, are bigger, than any other seafood place, I have visited in Malvan. The taste of all the food preparations here are essentially Malvani ( do not come here expecting other regional choices). They have an interesting vegetarian thali too, but , I have never been motivated to try that. They say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do:- so while in Malvani, I say, eat what the Malvanis eat , which is fish... My recommendations are, try the Crab Fry thali ( available on specific days) Surmai thali, the pomphret and prawans fry. and the chicken thali This is one of those place where you will get, not just good food, but also...
