A fish lover's heaven. This unpretentious reasonably priced place has an extensive menu, including Chinese. We stuck largely to Malwani menu except chicken momos and fish n chips for the youngest member. We ordered tandoori pomfret, fried bombay duck, tandoori lasooni boneless chicken, grilled rawas and pahadi paneer tikka for starters. Everything was delicious but the bombay duck and pomfret were especially appreciated. Sol kadi was a refreshing accompanying drink. For main course, kaale vataane ki sabzi hit the mark while bharel vaange was just ok. Chicken biryani and sukha mutton were big hit. Surmai in red curry and garlic butter crab were good. The prawn thali and the rawas thali had sprouted usal, daal and sol kadi as well. Bread choices offered were amboli, rice roti, chapati or vade. Rice is included in thali but no dessert. Thalis seemed to be a popular customer choice but we preferred the ala carte dishes. We finished off the meal with luscious caramel custard.
The plus points. Everything was freshly cooked and authentically spiced. The staff was attentive and obliging. The cons. Not much in way of ambience. Dessert menu is limited and the rice bhakri was more like rice chapati. But the food was sumptuous and the bill brought a...
Read moreBeautiful place to visit. I've never been to a Malvani restaurant run by an Eastindian person. Really worth the time we took to visit here.
We had been hearing of this place by word of mouth and wanted to visit it, but kept postponing it as the place was around 20 minutes away from our office.
But, when we visited the place, we were taken to heaven given those tantalizing aromas of the fresh fish curries and the fish frying ... we knew we were going to like this place.
The food is more like home cooked, so please do not expect the food to be more spicy or like the ones we taste in a normal hotel.
We had the Surmai, prawns and the halwa thalis along with the bombil fry and the prawns fry. Amazing taste. the gravy was so yummy and the rice hand breads were so soft we ordered more of them. The thali will have a fried Surmai, a Surmai curry with surmai fish in that too, sole curry, nice daal, papad, a yummy "brinjal jevala" and rice hand breads and steamed rice.
Our tummies were full, but our hearts weren't. so we ordered for the dessert ... a sweet caramel custard.
It made our hearts melt with joy !!!
Finally our meal here was over, but made us want to come back again...
Read moreThree of us visited the restaurant on 13.05.12 for dinner. Ambiance: Pleasant, wide spaces, large show windows which overlook a garden. Large restaurant with many tables. Service: Typical puneri-kind (kaa aalaat / oh since you've come type). Do not take suggestions easily. Food: We ordered kalwa fry (though this is a crustacean from barnacle family, they call it oyster); prawn in red curry; shark chilli fry; 5 chapati; 1 plate vade; 2 solkadi; 1 vati rice - total Rs.645/- (prices inclusive of taxes - nice touch) Review: Portions small; very little coconut used in all the dishes; whereas ,Malwani food is known for its extensive use of coconut(only the chutney & solkadi has coconut); though right next to versova, the catch did not taste fresh; the kalwa & prawn were hard/rubbery; shark good; vade sweet??; chapati's small & thin for a malwani restaurant; the prawn curry was an abomination! The chef had mixed a large helping of tomato ketchup with a thickening agent. It was like eating a 12 year old's first dish- prawn in ketchup curry. All in all a bad experience. Value For Money:...
