The Tanjore Tiffin Room - Chettinad (Tamil Nadu) all the way. Spicy/Tangy/Savoury/Sweet this has all the flavours in the dishes which they have in the menu. Apart from The Salad (Went for a toss) all the other dishes were good. This place is located level 2 at Union Park. Subtle interiors, not very heavy and less of southern touch. Feels homely.
Coming to what we tried (Tasting portions)
Mini Bonda was a good choice (Tamil nadu take) on the famous Maharashtrian Batata wada. Bit of curry pata flavour. Golden fried served with Coconut chutney. Price 275/+
Mini Gun-Powder Idli, have to ask for this if one visits a South Indian restaurant. Could have been fluffy and lighter, however Malgapodi and ghee balanced it well. Bit of sesame on top with curry pata flavour. Served with Mint chutney.
Pepper Chicken - Diced or call it Bite sized chicken pieces with black pepper marination. Tossed with lime. A bit of Ginger and Garlic hit and obviously Curry leaves. Taste - good. Not over.
Prawn Sundal - Finely chopped prawns tossed well with onions (sweetness) garlic and coconut. Guess a bit of Raw Mango gave the tangy taste to it. Flavours were subtle. A must if you are a prawn lover.
Nethili Fry - Known as Anchovy Big (known as Nethili in Tamil) these are basically small fish. One can make it with gravy or Fry the same and make it a Bar bite. Here the chef has fried it with homemade spices (Crunchy) with good texture. A bit Pungent in taste. Overall a good Bar Nibble.
Padmini's Mutton Cutlet (Home Recipe) Simple minced meat with balanced spices. Home-style cooking. Let the dish do the talking. Good.
Mains - After a spoon tasting of about 12 Gravy dishes and some rice (yes, they send you a thali which has tasting portions of all the gravy's) one needs to select it. Also the steward/captain in charge would recommend you what goes well with the one you like. Since i had made up my mind stuck to the Tangy side.
Moru Kulambu - Its Kadi basically but made tamilian version. Liked the texture and a bit of the tangy taste. This goes well with the steamed rice.
Meenakshi's (Home recipe) Vatha Kulambu - this is a TamilBram speciality. Very Tangy and a bit spicy with Tamarind. This is again a must have dish. Goes well with rice or Appam.
My Partner had a prawn dish (can't recollect the gravy) had a subtle coconut touch to it. Madewell. Balance was good so was the texture.
To end it was MYSORE PAK. Yum. Rich with ghee. Try this. Bet you can't stop having one.
Overall - Something different. Being Monday the place was packed. Yes they also serve alcohol. Do try their Garden Galata (Gin and Tonic) with a bit of passion fruit. Has freshness. Rose petal s cucumber and orange. Pondicherry Punch was good. Madewell. Basically Orange Basil Mojito.
Would surely be back for another round of Chettinad Cuisine - till...
