I am honestly surprised by the all reviews I see in the reviews section. It seems obvious that the reviews are forcefully extracted from customers from the waiters by asking them to rate with their names. Examples - all reviews have these specific names - mathi, senthil, Murugan, Mariappan, Gowtham, Nirmal, etc...this is a horrible practice and must be discouraged.
To the owner - you have quite a good restaurant with great food! You really don't have to stoop to such low levels and make your waiters force customers to give these fake reviews.
I will only review the food and give a one star rating because all these obviously fake and forced reviews. I am also reporting all the fake reviews.
Mutton bone soup - absolutely delicious. Creamy as well as tasty. Best I've had in ages.
Lemon coriander soup. Decent taste too.
Tandoori chicken - very well done. Juicy, right amount of spice and cooked to perfection.
Mutton kola urundai - recommended by them. Tasted good, but 4 small balls for 250 is over kill. Too over priced.
Biryani - not available. How does a restaurant this size run out of Biryani at 8 30 pm? No idea.
Fish fingers - one of more the better tasting fish fingers we tried in pondi. Fresh fish, decent portion size.
Paneer Tikka - was nicely done too. Not too great but good.
Parotta - loved it. Flaky, large portion size, nicely fried, and very well cooked. Saalna was delicious too.
Chicken fried rice - standard restraint style fried rice but tasted a little bland
Chettinad chicken curry - their recommendation. I agree. Worth it! Large portion size with plenty of meaty pieces.
Butter Naan - large Naan, well cooked.
Chicken Kari dosa - was okay. Nothing too special.
Price is slightly on the higher side. Service was quick and decent. Washrooms can be better.
Will recommend the place for it's food.
Parking instructions very unclear. Rain water logs badly at their entrance and they have makeshift sand bags to walk to the restaurant.
The hotel management also seems to have mixed up their lodging reviews with the restaurant reviews. It's easy to fix and they...
Read moreHotel Karai Chettinad, right on the bustling main road, is like the town's favorite hangout spot. However, if you dare to venture in between 1 to 3 on any weekend or festive holiday, be prepared to join the queue party.
Now, when it comes to cuisine, it's a Chettinad carnival – no Chinese or Punjabi interlopers here. Non-veg lovers hit the jackpot with a diverse menu, but vegetarians might feel like they stumbled into a carnivore's den – options are as rare as a veggie in a meat market.
The taste? A subtle dance on your taste buds, nothing to write home about, but it holds its own. What really tests your inner Zen is the waiting game – time crawls slower than a snail on vacation. The staff, caught in their own time warp, might not have a moment to unravel the mysteries of the local names on the menu or take your order without a bit of cosmic intervention.
Pro tip: Give them all your orders at once; it's your best shot at avoiding a one-person drama series.
Vegetarian meals? Well, Payasam, sambhar, and curd shine like culinary superheroes, but the rest might not win any awards. Heard some decent reviews from the non-vegetarian squad, though – seems like the grass is greener on the other side.
In summary, Hotel Karai Chettinad is like that quirky friend – not perfect, but you hang out anyway. Patience is your BFF here, especially if you're not a local food whisperer. A solid 2.5 on 5 – there's potential, but they need a crash course in customer service and a sprinkle of empathy. Cheers to culinary adventures, even if they come with a side of wait-induced existential...
