When Amit Dharwadkar told us about this ‘cookout’ concept of food tasting last week, we were certainly intrigued! Under the supervision of the chef, we’d be assisting with the cooking of a few of their specialties from the menu. Wow!

The place? Oliva Veg- DP road, off Mhatre bridge.

We chose a weekday for this tasting- and Neha Singh and Ameya Thorat- the people behind the brilliance, had reserved the entire outdoor section for us. Oliva veg is a well-known name in Pune- they’ve been operational at Bavdhan for almost a decade now. They recently opened a second branch on DP road, which we had noticed, but hadn’t visited before this- since it always is thronging with patrons! It is a multi-cuisine vegetarian specialty family restaurant, with a menu ranging from pizzas, pastas to punjabi and oriental cuisine.

The cookout gave us a chance to interact with Chef Dhondiram- a very meticulous perfectionist, and try our hands at making bruschetta, salad, pizzas. It gave us an insight into the efforts and ingredients that go into making the food that we have. It was definitely a lot of fun!

Unfortunately I reached a tad late since it was a working day for me- but the dishes I tried were quite good. Corn chilli triangles is something you definitely should NOT miss here! As is the honey chilli pineapple. The pizzas too were good- the mozzarella, jalapeños, bell peppers were fresh- and the tomato sauce is made in- house. Crispy bhindi was ordered just for me (a bhindi fan!!!) and was superb!

We were quite full, yet also had a taste of a couple of punjabi gravies with butter roti and oriental rice dishes. The flavours in each were distinct. The dessert menu is limited- we tried the brownie with ice cream.

The ambience in the indoor sitting area is also very pleasant (we moved indoors after a while to enjoy the rest of our meal in the air conditioned section).

The pasta itself, slightly sticky and thick, offered a perfect balance, complementing the spicy flavors that danced on our tongues.
