The GEM WITH THE GREATEST POTENTIAL TO SHINE
I first visited Gem Park Hotel nearly 28 years ago, when it was truly the crown gem of Ooty. Returning after all these years, I couldn’t help but feel that it has lost much of its sparkle—though the potential to reclaim its rightful place remains very much alive, thanks to its location and sweeping views.
I dropped in for lunch at Jade Garden (the Chinese restaurant) on a Thursday afternoon. What struck me immediately was that there wasn’t a single other guest—a surprising sight for what is by far the best-located restaurant in Ooty. It felt like a missed opportunity - especially with so much of potential to attract locals on a weekday.
The meal was EXTREMELY disappointing. For the princely sum of ₹2000, we had a bowl of Jade soup, vegetable noodles, seasonal veggies in soy, and sweet-and-sour pork (oddly roasted rather than fried). However, one major dampener was observing the filthy staff accommodation directly beneath the building—a stark contrast to the standards one expects at a hotel of this stature.
That said, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Suresh Nair, the Operations Manager, who is energetically spearheading a comprehensive renovation and refurbishment program. With his background as a seasoned luxury hotel engineer, I am hopeful that the Gem Park will indeed shine once more.
A word of caution: you can renovate a property to grandeur, but true success in luxury hospitality rests on food quality, service excellence, and the passion and dynamism of motivated employees. If these elements are nurtured, I believe Gem Park Hotel can once again reclaim its place as the crown jewel of the QUEEN...

Jade Garden is undoubtedly the best place in Ooty for authentic Chinese cuisine, offering a 5-star dining experience with stunning views. Perched on top of a hill, the restaurant provides a breathtaking viewpoint, making it a perfect spot to enjoy a relaxing meal with family or friends.
The food here is top-notch, with some must-try dishes like the flavorful and perfectly glazed Pork Char Siu, the deliciously balanced Mixed Hakka Noodles, and the sizzling hot Chicken Sizzler, which is a treat for both the eyes and the taste buds.
While the menu is slightly on the pricier side, the authentic flavors, excellent service, and stunning ambiance make it worth every penny. This is a beautiful place to spend a couple of hours, soaking in the scenic views while indulging in some of the best Chinese food Ooty has to offer.

Their couch area with bonfire is too cozy.
We order Pan fried rice Chicken noodles (saucy) & Chicken mono with red chutney. They provided a salad which is so good. Cucumber with sugar syrup n vinegar. Cabbage & carrot in red chilly sauce n topped with fresh white sesame we asked for refill because it’s that good.
