It was started by Shri Bhargav Gokhale almost 8 decades ago as a small eatery and has grown in leaps and bounds in size and also in terms of its popularity. This is gauged by a simple observation, the crowd that queues at the cash counter irrespective of the tome of the day. This is pay-first & eat later type of eatery / restaurant. They operate on a self-service mode. They have done up the place in such a way that patrons can sit on the tables placed opposite the cash counter for which you obviously have to wait for your turn or you can stand & eat in the adjoining room. The kitchen has a see-through glass put up and one can watch the activities inside. The one thing which stuck to me was the cleanliness of the place. It was spic-n-span to a fault. At frequent intervals, a couple of guys would come to sweep the floor & swab it clean with a mop. This activity was carried out irrespective of whether or not anything had dropped / spilled / fallen on the floor. There was a place for everything and everything was at its place. It goes without saying that people who care so much about hygiene & cleanliness will no doubt be serving a very good quality food. I tried the MISAL which was midly spiced and a bit easy on the oil. The taste was very unique in its own way. They use farsan & thin gathia to garnish the Misal. This is a MUST-HAVE dish at this restaurant. Next I tried the Kothimbir Wadi, which was served 3 pieces to a plate. The Kothimbir Wadi was lightly fried for a short duration. This was evident from the insides of the Wadi retaining their moistness and softness. Surely RECOMMENDED. I was hungry for more hence I tried the WADA PAV. The Wada was mild in taste, of a decent size and crisply fired. I had a KARVAND JUICE as a beverage. Karvand or Karonda [as known in Hindi] is a reddish black berry which is found in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. Its taste is dominantly sweet with a tinge of sourness. It was a refreshing change from the aerated drinks that we are used to having. The price for the above items came to Rs.110 per head which is VFM according to me. Gokhale Uphaar Gruh takes pride is serving pure & authentic Maharashtrian vegetarian snack food & mini meals. The very fact that many locals throng this place is an indicator of its popularity and never-ending hordes of fans. This is definitely a MUST-VISIT place in Thane to sample some Maharashtrian delicacies! Food Quality – 4/5 Food Quantity – 4/5 Ambience – 4/5 Price – 4/5 Service – NA [It’s a self-service outlet]

This is a traditional Maharastrian eatery that is located off the busy Gokhale Road. They are a compact restaurant with limited space for dining. There is no wait service and one has to pay in advance and then collect the food and either stand and eat at the area adjoining the billing counter or use the semi open dining area with seats at the front. They are very popular so expect to see long lines during peak hours. They serve a range of Maharatrian delicacies including Thali Peeth, Kothambir Wadi, Alu Vada and more. They serve locally popular dishes like Vada Pav, Misal Pac, Upma, Sheera, Puri Bhaji and also some South Indian dishes like Idli and Vada. They also seve dishes that are eaten during upvas and serve those dishes daily. They serve kokam based drinks like Sol Kadi and Kokam Juice. They also serve Lassi locally called Piyush. Their food is simple, not too oily or spicy and reasonably priced. They charge extra for the packaging if food is for take away.

Hands down one of the best restaurants in Mumbai to try the authentic maharashtrian cuisine. This compliment coming from a marathi person is a big thing in itself. Almost everything here is delicious and there is nothing particular to recommend as you can experience a consistent supremacy in taste across all the dishes. But my personal favourite has been Misal pav and Batata vada. Matar karanji is worth mentioning. To add to the culinary fanfare are their super delicious drinks, especially the iconic Piyush and Mango lassi. One admirable thing is that though it is a maharashtrian restaurant, the south Indian dishes though limited in number are great in taste, especially the idli. Surprisingly the sabudana vada was the least enticing of all and you might skip it. The seating arrangement is pretty basic here but who cares when you get such high quality food. If you want to experience some quality marathi cuisine, rest assured that this is the place to be at !!

I recently visited Shree Gokhale Upahar Gruha in Thane to enjoy some authentic Maharashtrian cuisine, and I have to say, it was a delightful experience.

The restaurant has a warm and welcoming ambience, with traditional decor and comfortable seating. The staff were friendly and attentive, and made us feel right at home.

The menu had a wide variety of Maharashtrian dishes to choose from, and each one was better than the last. We started with the Misal Pav, which was spicy and flavourful, and followed it up with the Thalipeeth and Sabudana Vada, both of which were delicious.

The highlight of the meal, however, was the Puran Poli - a sweet flatbread filled with jaggery and lentils. It was the perfect end to a satisfying meal.

What impressed me the most about Shree Gokhale Upahar Gruha was the quality and authenticity of the food. Each dish was prepared with care and attention to detail, and tasted like it was made in a traditional Maharashtrian home kitchen.

The prices were also very reasonable, making it a great option for a budget-friendly meal.

Overall, I had a great experience at Shree Gokhale Upahar Gruha and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for delicious Maharashtrian food in Thane. The warm and welcoming ambience, friendly staff, and authentic flavours make it a must-visit spot for foodies...
