Sheroes Hangout: Empowering Acid Attack Survivors in India
Sheroes Hangout is a remarkable initiative in India, established by the Chhanv Foundation, that stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for survivors of acid attacks. This innovative concept combines a café with a powerful message, aiming to raise awareness about acid attacks and promote the rehabilitation and inclusion of survivors into society. Currently, the project boasts two thriving café locations in Agra and Lucknow.
The Chhanv Foundation, founded by Laxmi Agarwal and Alok Dixit, both passionate advocates for acid attack survivors, has been at the forefront of the fight against acid violence. Sheroes Hangout is one of their most impactful endeavors, where survivors of these horrific attacks not only find employment but also a platform to share their stories and regain their self-esteem.
The café setting of Sheroes Hangout is designed to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where patrons can engage with survivors, hear their stories, and learn about the challenges they face. This experiential approach fosters empathy and understanding among customers, challenging the stigma associated with acid attack survivors.
The menu at Sheroes Hangout is not just about delicious food and beverages but also serves as a symbol of resilience. The survivors themselves often prepare and serve the dishes, showcasing their skills and abilities. The café also sells handicrafts and merchandise made by these survivors, providing them with an additional source of income and economic independence.
Beyond the cafés, Sheroes Hangout conducts outreach and awareness campaigns, visiting schools and colleges to educate students about the consequences of acid attacks and the importance of gender equality and women's rights. These initiatives have helped change societal perceptions and encourage support for survivors.
In a society where acid attacks continue to plague the lives of many women, Sheroes Hangout is a symbol of strength, resilience, and solidarity. It has not only transformed the lives of survivors but has also played a pivotal role in reshaping attitudes and perceptions, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and empathetic society in India. As it continues to grow and inspire, Sheroes Hangout stands as a shining example of the power of community, compassion, and determination in the face...
Read moreI went there from IIM Lucknow campus and trust me, reaching there via local public transport was a real pain! I didnt opt for cab service because I wanted to travel in local bus in Lucknow but things didnt go as anticipated.
I walked up to IIM L chowraha and expected to get a bus (as suggested by few localites) but didnt get any. So I then taken an auto to Bithauli Village, then taken another auto to some other village, then taken another auto to polytechnic and then taken another auto to BR Ambedkar Park and then walked up to this cafe which was like 1km ahead.
The area and crowd around IIML chowraha, Bithouli, Polytechnic was terrible, didnt feel safe for women. But the area around BR Ambedkar part was really good. It was high on security too and the walk felt pleasant there.
About this cafe experience - the only thing i liked about dining out here is the quality and taste of food
But the dislikes are more :
I didnt like how they monetized and commercialised this business just to increase their revenue and traffic. I had been to Agra Sheroes cafe earlier and so I had high expectations but this lko cafe totally shattered my hopes.
This cafe lost its core purpose, essence and mission. As per my research on internet and experience in Agra Branch, this cafe was supposed to have a no-price-menu so that people could pay what they wish to pay. But to my surprise, the prices against each dish in the menu were mentioned and the prices were too high.
the staff also wasn't as warm as the staff in Agra branch of this cafe. The staff instead pushed us to leave soon so that they could go back home and chill.
the decor, seating arrangement, ambience, and everything else was terrible. they had this music system also that sounded so loud. I had to request them to put it off because I am not comfortable with high volume while having my meals.
I don't recommend this cafe at all. If you wish to visit this cafe to satiate your curiosity or for a cause then visit their Agra branch rather, I promise you would thank yourself later for...
Read moreFrom the moment I stepped into this establishment, I was greeted by a friendly atmosphere and a positive vibe that instantly uplifted my spirits. It was heartening to learn that the incredible individuals serving here are acid attack survivors, each with their own unique journey of resilience. Despite their past hardships, their confidence and energy shone through, and they served with genuine smiles on their faces.
The restaurant not only offers a welcoming ambiance but also delights the taste buds with its high-quality food. Every dish I tried was a true culinary delight, and it was evident that great care and attention went into their preparation. I highly recommend indulging in their Paneer Tikka, Veg Cutlet, Grilled Sandwich, Virgin Mozito, and Cold Coffee with Ice Cream.
The location itself is perfect for a cozy evening in the summers or a relaxed afternoon in the winters. Additionally, there is a small library available, adding an extra touch of charm to the place.
I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the indomitable spirit of the survivors who have triumphed over adversity. Their presence and dedication truly make this place special.
If you find yourself in Lucknow, I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this remarkable establishment. Not only will you have a memorable dining experience, but you will also support a cause that celebrates resilience and...
