Even one star is too much for the kind of food and service this restaurant provides. I have eaten in their Park Street joint and the food there was fabulous. Here in Sodepur they are extremely understaffed, took almost one and half hours to prepare our food. We ordered steamed rice, kochupata chingri bhapa, pomfret dhakai bhuna and mutton kosturi dakbanglow.
Kochupata chingri bhapa is a typical Bengali dish where small fresh skinned chapra prawns are steamed (ESSENTIALLY NOT FRIED) with kochu pata in a mustard coconut paste with mustard oil and green chillies. Whereas the dish they served contained cold stale mustard coconut gravy and chewy rubbery fried prawns which are not at all fresh and smelled very bad. Moreover they gave only three small prawns and managed with potato wedges(IT'S A MURDER) which was really disheartening.
Coming to the pomfret dhakai bhuna, the fish was stinking awfully. The gravy had separate water base and a massala paste, which means they had just put a previously fried fish in a previously prepared gravy and they put a bit of water and they just boiled everything together.
Next is the mutton dakbanglow which contained cold chewy mutton pieces most probably directly from the freezer which are not even properly thawed before putting in the gravy. Though this gravy was freshly prepared they didn't cook the massala properly and was smelling of raw jeera.
There were 10 to 12 other families waiting for their orders, while they kept on providing take aways and Zomato deliveries and kept there in-house customers waiting.
As if these were not enough, just when we were leaving the restaurant a typical cringey regressive misogynist wall painting caught my eyes, which says, " সংসার সুখের হয় রন্ধন পটিয়সী রমণীর গুণে" meaning, " a family only becomes content by virtue of the cooking expertise of the women in it."
All in all I never had a more cringeworthy restaurant experience in...
Read moreKasturi, an authentic Bengali restaurant in Kolkata, is a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in the rich and flavorful cuisine of Bengal. From the moment you step inside, you are transported to a world of traditional Bengali hospitality, with warm greetings from the staff and a cozy atmosphere that immediately puts you at ease.
One of the standout dishes at Kasturi is the Maharaja Thali, a sumptuous spread of Bengali delicacies that is fit for a king. The thali includes a range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, including rice, dal, chutney, papad, and a variety of curries and side dishes. The highlight of the thali, however, is the mutton kassa, a spicy and aromatic preparation of tender mutton pieces cooked in a blend of traditional Bengali spices. The mutton kassa is truly a standout dish that is not to be missed.
For those who prefer a more straightforward meat dish, the mutton thali is another excellent option. This thali includes a generous serving of mutton curry, along with rice, dal, chutney, and other side dishes. The mutton in this dish is cooked to perfection, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture and a rich, hearty flavor that is sure to satisfy any meat lover.
Overall, Kasturi is a top-notch Bengali restaurant that offers a truly authentic culinary experience. From the attentive service to the expertly crafted dishes, every aspect of the dining experience at Kasturi is carefully designed to transport you to the heart of Bengal. Read moreRecently, we had a family gathering of 25 people for my son's birthday in the sodepur branch of Kasturi. We have given an advance and booked for the day two weeks before the day . On the day of the event, Kasturi has disappointed me with its beyond poor service. We have already told that we would have thalis as discussed before but they insisted on having ala carte as it would minimize food waste. We agreed to that, but as soon as the service started, they have gone bad to worse. Rather than dissolving the situation they kept on blaming us repeatedly. After just one service they ran out of food. But we could see that the food is constantly going out for delivery services through swiggy and Zomato. Despite telling them repeatedly to.keep the arrangement for 25 guests, we have not been served with the food we wanted and expected. I faced a tremendous face loss in front of my guests. I have come to the conclusion that Kasturi Sodepur is not capable of handling such gatherings. The behaviour of the staffs were not courteous. We were humiliated. I have been to other Bengali restaurants in the city with the same arrangement and unlike Kasturi, they have served me with excellent service. Upgrade the food service management of the restaurant and keep people there who can guide the customers properly. Kasturi is a big name and I am utterly disappointed with the service despite serving good quality food.
