We , meat lovers always think more than twice while steping inside a vegetarian restaurant . There is always a feeling inside us which says that veg food is nothing at all when compared to non veg dishes . But I feel fortunate enough to visit a place like Urban masala which clearly gives a strong statement in terms of vegetarian cuisine .
Urban masala is located in the lane adjacent to Jaya cinema at Lake Town . Clearly they have brought a revolution in vegetarian food ,its glory has spread very fast among citizens of Kolkata . Taking about the ambience firstly it has nice quotes hung on the walls all around , comfy sofas and chairs to give you a fine dining experience. With prompt service staffs are extremely polite and helpful. What cheers me up the most is the cost attached to all items in the menu card. We mainly focused on their Indian cuisine with only few exceptions.
We kicked off with the perfectly balanced virgin mojito . It had the right amount of sweet and fizz in it . Then the tandoori platter took the stage on fire . It consisted of mainly 4 kebabs - tandoori alu, tandoori paneer tikka , tandoori mushroom and veg seekh kebab. With perfectly added spice and we'll cooked centre each of the kebabs itself was a stand out dish for me. Of which mushrooms has be my favourite. Even the alu was full of flavours , it wasn't a regular alur dom which is available on the roadside .
For the mains we had 4 types of Indian breads . Cheese naan , garlic naan ,butter naan and masala kulcha . Cheese naan which we paired with daal makhani, paneer butter masala , malai kofta and vegetable jhal farezi. Each of them had its own posistives . Only I feel that the malai kofta was overly sweetened . Veg jhal farezi had various vegetables mixed in a mildly spicy gravy . Daal makhani is the stand out among them . But I also loved the pairing of garlic naan with paneer butter masala. The masala kulcha had good amount of masalas stuffed inside and hence it came up to be my favourite among the breads section . It surpassed the goodness of the cheese naans .
Not to mention we also had the vegetable biriyani that most people prefer to call as veg polao , but I have hardly seen a polao with whole cooked potatoes in it . Hence i guess the misconception is settled for now. The rice was perfectly cooked with less oil and not much spices , it had carrots , cottage cheese ,peas and other vegetables to make up for its meaty counterpart . It was served with a raita which I forgot to taste as I was busy with the more popular items .
To slightly change our palate we had the veg au gratin from the continental section . Vegetables like peas bell peppers carrots mixed with lots and lots of cheese and baked in the over to crisp up the top layer . This dish is a heaven for cheese lovers .
With our stomachs almost full , the desserts arrived . Tutty fruity being the first one impressed from the first sight . Served inside a glass topped with wafer and chocolate sticks they call for immediate consumption . Made up of different layers of ice cream flavours mixed with lots of freshly cut fruits this dessert is not only tasty but also a healthy option .
It was succeeded by a plate of hot brownie with cold ice cream scoop of vanilla placed over it , drizzled with chocolate sauce . Being a brownie lover I instantly feel in love with the dish and it the flavours didn't disappoint me at all . It was perfectly baked brownie with a goey chocolaty centre which occupied a place in my heart .
Lastly the paan kulfi ended the meal . It is also one of their signature dessert and they are the best in it. Flavoured with beetle leaves and served with gulkand on the side this will make you return to this place again and again.
In a nutshell being a hardcore meat lover I came home with a full stomach and a smile on my face so rest is upto you to...
