Menjamu Ubud — Restaurant in Bali

"Good value for money" I had the pleasure of dining at Menjamu Ubud last night, and I must say, it was a good experience! The moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and a welcoming ambience. For being a small place, it lacks charisma from a design point of view, but it makes up for it with its friendly staff and delicious food. Point of strength: a Negroni made to perfection and served with an ice ball. An unusual wine selection for Ubud, which featured 4 foreign wines, including a very good Californian Chardonnay."

We started with the CUMI MANIS and the BEBEK MANGGA, which were cooked to well, really generous portion (big for a small plate). Was pretty empty when we went. Stuff squid looks like it was one of their specials so ordered it. Sauce cold, the squid itself was not fresh and of low quality —- one of those probably frozen types ( some frozen stuff can be good) but this was slight bitterness with no taste otherwise type. Plating looks good but really quality and edibility is impt. Other dish we had was also not good. Appears to me most of the reviews could be fake or rather by ‘professionals’ but what do I know. I didn’t take time to carefully peruse or dissect before entering as I was starving! It is only after eating that I am scratching my head about it.

The food is not up to scratch. Nasi goreng kampung tastes bland, rice misses the seared taste (wok hei), satay is hard. Beef rendang is served on a bed of mashed potatoes that tastes bland, and is a weird combo anyway. All the crackers are not crispy (chao hong). Given the pricing and setup, expected much better food. In short, I'm also puzzled by the rave reviews here. Definitely not the best food around and the lack of customers on a Saturday evening is a give away. But top marks for the good service. Perhaps the owner, who I met briefly, can consider doing a proper QC...
