Monsieur Spoon Canggu — Restaurant in Bali

This place has been my favorite for sometimes and I have been meaning to write honest review but wanted to wait after I visit the place several times more. The place itself is amazing - cozy and designed very well, I personally always prefer to sit in the garden. On first visits last year I was never disappointed by food and drinks I ordered - my fav is the french toast, really yumm. On my last visit just few days ago though, iced coffee that I had was quite terrible, it was tasteless and 70% watery ice, while my expectation was quite high because I assumed this is the kind of place I can get excellent coffee at.

Now despite some good food and great ambiance, I can't give more than 3 stars because of the service is poor.. and it has been consistent every time I visited. The waiters/waitresses are friendly but they ALWAYS busy chatting between themselves instead of waiting for the table, it was always hard to get their attention just to order food - isn't it normal that after you offer the menu you just have to pay attention that the customers are about to order? Everytime we wanted to order we had to came up of our seats to find someone - ALWAYS - very uncomfortable. They also brought the order wrong several times, not really focus of what they are doing. We had to catch our plane and it was the only open place. Since we were in a hurry, we immediately chose the “French breakfast 60k IDR” from the menu on the table and said we want this menu by showing the visual. The employees did not know English, I tried to negotiate by showing the visual and translating it into Indonesian. None of these were a problem because afterwards they asked if we wanted a small or large breakfast, we said we wanted a small breakfast, the employee left and came back and said there was no small, only large, but he never stated the price and never brought it to us on the menu. Then, since we were in a hurry, we decided to make a payment before waiting to eat, when we looked at the bill, we saw that it said 360k IDR for two coffees and two meals and we were shocked, then we went and explained that there was a misunderstanding, we did not choose this in any way, we were not shown etc. We said we could not shop under these conditions, we said we would only drink our coffee, we just paid the price of the coffees and left, no help was provided, and on top of that, they tried to take our money. I would not recommend it in any way, the employees do not know a foreign language and they try to make money from foreigners and do nothing to compensate,...

So disappointing. I came here last year and the service was amazing, but this morning was a completely different story. The staff were rude, unprofessional, and downright disrespectful. There was a mix-up with my order, and instead of handling it with any kind of grace, they overcharged me and tried to argue about it.

I was charged $20 for just a coffee and croissant. When I went back to question it, the staff member insisted I’d ordered a smoothie bowl too — which I hadn’t. They hadn’t even started making it, yet she still argued. I stood my ground and got my change back.

After that, things just went downhill. They didn’t give me any cutlery for my croissant, so I had to go back and ask. Then, after waiting 20 minutes, my coffee still hadn’t shown up — I had to remind them again. When it finally arrived, it was burnt. Honestly, it felt intentional, like they were being spiteful because of the earlier disagreement.

Never experienced such bad service in my life. Do yourself a favour — skip this place. There are far better cafés just...
