I was in love with this place before I ever stepped inside, just based on how it looks as you pass it by on the street. Cascading greenery from the upper balcony is gorgeous and really sets your expectations for the evening. Overall, Koki Sunda ("Sundanese Chef") doesn't disappoint. Staff is plentiful and friendly. This is overall not an English-speaking place but they're happy to have visitors and can accommodate anyone who can point at a menu. Cash, credit cards, and I think OVO and e-wallet options are accepted.
This restaurant has multiple floors and ample seating for even very large groups. Outdoor balcony seating is beautiful especially during a nice rain. Prices are mid-range and up for Medan - ambiance ain't cheap!
Their menu is deep with options - chicken and fish dishes predominate and like many restaurants in Indonesia you won't find pork on the menu. They have an extensive menu of fresh fruit juice drinks, but these can run out depending on demand.
Their food is beautiful to look at as well as delicious to taste. Try the whole fish, filleted with the head on and delivered on a platter as an entire piece of art. Their satay is flavorful without being overly spicy, as is their fried chicken wings/drumettes.
Don't presume they can't bring the spicy here, though! Try a whole steamed ikan covered in chilis that's tender as well as heat-packed. Staff are happy to help you understand what is likely to be spicy and what are safer options, and may even be able to adjust spiciness levels as you request. However remember that here in Medan even a mild spice setting is still likely to create a bit of initial panic after the first bite in someone with very tame taste preferences.
Additionally they have a sambal bar where you can help yourself to some fresh vegetables along with an assortment of sambals (the national chili garnish concoction).
This is a beautiful spot if you're just visiting Medan briefly or if you live here and want to take guests from out of town somewhere pleasant. There are less expensive places to get some of these dishes in town, but hard to find someplace that can compete with Koki Sunda in terms of breadth of menu options as well as ambiance. Definitely a must-see...
