Take Japanese Restaurant Jl. Jelantik Kuta Bali July 2019
Umi no Budo or sea grape seaweed with sweet ponzu dipping sauce for 32 K IDR++
This thing is just amazing. It's just so fresh and light, it gives that slight salty burst of the ocean, and it goes just so well with the sweet ponzu sauce. If you like seaweed, nothing could possibly beat the sensation of tasting the fresh oceanic breeze explode in your mouth. I know it's hard to find - this is probably the first time i have encountered it myself - but that is even more reason for you to order it if you ever see it on a menu. Seriously, try it and you won't be disappointed.
Now their Maguro Aburi (seared tuna, slide for picture) is also a great deal at 78 K IDR ++ considering just how good and filling it is compared to how other sushi purveyors in Jakarta would serve theirs. Take clearly takes (bddm tssh 😜) their sourcing seriously, and i thank my chef friend for taking me here. However, what is arguably even better is their Shiro sashimi or butter fish is an even more unbelievably good deal at 52 K IDR++. Now the tuna is filling and of top quality, but the butter fish really just melts in your mouth and keeps you wanting more. It's not much to look at, at first glance, but it really is that good. Please do try it if you ever come across it.
Subsequently, 39.8 K++ for 5 pork gyozas is also great. The filling is so light and juicy and the skin is so thin, light, and springy that one wonders why so many others can't do it as well as this even when they pack so much more of the filling. If you like gyozas, don't miss this one.
A notable mention also goes to their maguro nattou at 52.8 K++ which is a great combination of tastes and textures, but i know natto might not be for everyone.
As for drinks, go for their Arak Honey for 41.5 K++ which is just so smooth and enjoyable you know they used good arak and honey. Their 43 K++ caiprinha isn't bad either, but the arak honey really is the winner here.
Take is THE restaurant to go to if you have a hankering for sushi in Bali.

Read moreI went there for lunch after confirming via phone if they did Tepanyaki. I was told they did so I went there. When we arrived, we were half arsely greeted by a surley looking waitress that clearly hated her job and life ans were told they infact did not do Tepanyaki for lunch. I should have left then and there as it just went downhill from there.
We ordered individual meals for 4 which came out in separate intervals for the next 40 minutes. We had ordered a kg of clams to be shared which did not come out after 45 mins from order. By this stage, we had all finished our meals so asked how long the clams would be. I was told 3 minutes so we waited another 10. Still no clams so we decided to leave. When we were paying our bill, they tried to make us pay for the clams which we refused. If you can't deliver what was ordered in a timely fashion, please do not expect payment for it or a tip! They then tried to make us take it as take away. Seafood in hot bali weather... how about NO.
Other frustrations include asking for a cocktail and told by the trainee waitress that she would check if we can do it. After 20 minutes of waiting, I asked her again and she said No, we can't make it so I chose to order a fruit drink instead. Bar staff overheard the conversation and said 'actually, we can do that'. Clearly she had not even asked them and had forgotten. The kitchen staff also took one of our dishes to another table and after members of that table had poked around in the dish and determined it wasn't theirs, it was returned to us. Absolute disgrace of an establishment and if I could, I would give them a minus.
Teach your staff to be friendly and competent. I will not be recommending this place to anyone and will deter friends from going there in the future because of my experience there. Absolute disgrace of a place. Save your money and...
Read moreI wish this place lived up to all the reviews and recommendations. I have friends that rave about Take so I was genuinely looking forward to the experience. It was unfortunately not a good one. There are so many other great restaurants in Bali much more worthy of your business.
In short, food is not particularly good and several menu items are consistently out of stock (perhaps they should just remove them from the menu?) As well, the service is really wanting. Servers disappear periodically for long periods of time, orders are forgotten and overall it feels as though staff are ill-trained and not invested in the customer's experience at all. On several occasions we had to ask repeatedly (different people at our table, asking at least 5 times, possibly more...not exaggerating) for items such as a spoon to go with the soup they'd already served or a tea for everyone in the party, not just a select few.
On the pro side, I love the seating options. The floor seating is cozy and fun for groups. This place has the potential to be great. The menu is extensive and fun.
I wish Take success. I really do. I don't like writing reviews like this but several dining experiences at Take have left me really disappointed, frustrated and looking elsewhere for my Japanese...
