As a first-time traveler to Malang, I was truly delighted to discover Lafayette Coffee & Eatery. The moment I walked in, I was greeted with an elegant and aesthetic atmosphere that blended heritage charm with modern comfort. Every corner seemed thoughtfully designed, offering perfect spots for photos that capture the beauty of the café. It instantly gave me the sense that this was not just an ordinary coffee shop, but rather a destination worth visiting. The overall first impression was warm, inviting, and memorable.
The menu here is outstanding, offering a wide variety of both Asian and Western dishes. I decided to try something Mediterranean, specifically the Turkish Meat Pizza, and it was a revelation. The thin, slightly crisp dough combined with perfectly seasoned meat created a rich and savory experience. The subtle spices balanced with the freshness of the toppings made every bite extraordinary. It was easily one of the best pizzas I’ve ever tasted, and it left a lasting impression.
Beyond the food, the café provides thoughtful facilities that make every visit comfortable and convenient. There is a dedicated family room, a prayer room (musholla), and even separate restrooms for men and women, which shows attention to detail. The seating itself is remarkably comfortable, with cushioned chairs that encourage guests to linger. I found myself spending hours there without even realizing how quickly time had passed. It felt like the perfect place to both relax and recharge.
The highlight, however, is undoubtedly the rooftop area. From here, guests are treated to a beautiful panorama overlooking the famous Kayutangan intersection, one of Malang’s most iconic spots. Whether during the golden hours of sunset or under the evening lights, this view creates an atmosphere that is both vibrant and unforgettable. The combination of fresh air, cozy seating, and a bustling cityscape makes the rooftop truly special. It’s the kind of place where one could enjoy a long conversation or a quiet moment with equal satisfaction.
Overall, Lafayette Coffee & Eatery feels more like a halal lounge than just a café. It combines excellent food, comfortable spaces, and stunning views into one complete experience. For me, it perfectly represents the hospitality and charm of Malang. I would confidently recommend it to both locals and fellow travelers seeking something special. On my personal scale, I would rate it a solid...

We went here to have an early dinner and also because it is just next to the hotel we stayed at. Nothing really special when we just came into the cafe, we found a table and nobody came to us to bring us the menu or anything. Until we asked the staff what we needed to do to order, he explained nicely that we needed to go to the cashier to order. The line wasn't long, about 5-7 minutes waiting.
After we ordered and paid for the food, the cashier passed me a black sarong and whispered to me that I can use that to cover my legs as I was wearing a dress that doesn't cover my knees and legs. I was pretty shocked and wore that sarong straight away and apologised to the lady because I wasn't aware and didn't know anything about the dresscode, she's pretty good about it and says it's ok and apologised to me as well.
Our drinks and food came pretty quick actually, the taste was pretty average, very light and I just couldn't taste the authenticity of the local dishes, that room for improvement #1 actually. (We ordered nasi rawon + sate ponorogo)
Room for improvement #2 is the sign for the dress code. I mean come on.... Nobody nowadays has time to check/read the banner especially when it's blended with the interior. Could've made an eye-catching banner/standout colour banner.
Room for improvement #3, it would be very helpful/appreciated if there's at least one or two staff greeting customers at the front door to give an information about the dress code or explain about how to order, because you guys obviously hire a lot of young people to stand around behind the cashier (doing nothing, just standing and staring around) it really doesn't look good for your business.
Question: why did you name your cafe/restaurant with such a French name? Could've just named it with arabian or middle eastern name.
Very biased...
Read moreCame here on a Wednesday night with my family. Upon entering this place, there is a sign prohibiting the use of shorts, mini skirts, and tank tops. I thought that was interesting. Fortunately all of us were formally dressed, so no one said anything. However, the queue took such a long time, around 30 minutes to put in your order. The fancy decoration did not match with their fast-food like ordering system, you need to pay up-front. They don’t have a separate line for customers who just want to buy the cakes and pastry unfortunately. We ordered five mains; nasi uduk, soto betawi, bubur ayam, beef lasagna, and gado-gado. We also ordered drinks and desserts. It took 1 hour and a lot of complaining for the kitchen to process the order. The kitchen did look disorganized, its members moving without someone in command. Such a shame seeing that the cafe is big and is located in an up and coming area yet the staff to be untrained. Seeing the comments below, I see a pattern that this place, in my not-so-humble opinion is discriminatory. Perhaps due to us being Chinese we didn’t receive a decent service. We saw the not-Chinese couple behind us who came awhile after us received their order while we’re still waiting for ours. The food was just okay, soto betawi is too salty, nasi uduk doesn’t have the coconut flavor, beef lasagna was tepid, bubur campur was too sweet. They did compensate us with drinks which is super sugary. I hate using this racist card, but if you care about decent service then my suggestion is to find another place.
P.s. : the sink in the woman toilet was clogged and filled to the brim. As well the trash can was full of tissues. It seems like they didn’t have a good system albeit having...
