This Catholic Church is located at Jalan MGR Sugiyopranoto No.2, Kiduldalem, Klojen, Malang City, East Java 65119. This church belongs to Kayutangan Parish with name / protector : Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Its location is very strategic, exactly in the center of Malang, not far from the legendary Oen Shop and from the town square of Malang. No wonder access to the church is very easy from any direction in the city of Malang.

This church belongs to one of the historical buildings that are protected by law, given its age which has existed since the Dutch era.

The structure of the building is really oldies Catholic and remains charming with a strong religious impression. The parking spaces are not too wide, but relatively able to serve cars and motorcycles of the church congregation.

Great cathedral, in the center of town, built in 1905 (guessing Dutch era).

Attended Sunday 9am mass (also 7am). It’s very full, outside seating provided for late comers.

Recommend arriving early as lovely church and songs sang by parishioners is super nice (even the priest plays the guitar and harmonica for his homily lol)

Even for foreigners, would recommend attending as mass proceedings is the same so you can follow even though it’s a different language and you can see there’s a strong Christian community living in harmony with others.

Di Malang pada zaman kolonial, terdapat dua buah gereja Katolik yang besar. Pertama adalah Gereja Hati Kudus Yesus yang ada di Jalan Kayoetangan (sekarang Jl. Basuki Rachmad), dan Gereja Santa Theresia (Theresia Kerk) yang berada di Jalan Ijen. Yang tertua adalah Gereja Hati Kudus di Jalan Kayoetangan, yang didirikan pada tahun 1905. Dari kejauhan, Gereja Kayutangan menjadi penanda Kota Malang, terutama dengan dua menaranya yang menjulang. Saat itu, Malang masih merupakan sebuah kota kabupaten, belum merupakan sebuah pemerintah kota. Sebenarnya sejak tahun 1880 sudah ada sebuah gereja yang terletak di sebelah utara alun-alun (sekarang sudah dibongkar) yang dipakai bersama-sama oleh umat Katolik dan umat Protestan.

Pada tahun 1897 umat Katolik menumpang pendopo Kabupaten Malang sebagai tempat peribadatan. Saat itu paroki dipimpin oleh Romo Godefriedus Daniel Augustinus Jonckbloet. Sementara itu Bupati Malang adalah R.A. Notodiningrat III yang memerintah pada 1854-1898. Pendopo kabupaten beberapa lama menjadi gereja Katolik lengkap dengan orgel, kamar pengakuan dosa, mimbar dan bangku komuni. Delapan tahun kemudian, tepatnya pada 1905 barulah Gereja Kayutangan dibangun di utara alun-alun. Hal ini menjadikannya sebagai gereja Katolik tertua di Kota Malang.

Pendirian Gereja Hati Kudus Yesus di Jalan Kayoetangan ini sebenarnya secara tidak langsung mempunyai hubungan erat dengan sejarah perkembangan arsitektur kolonial di Hindia Belanda. Gereja ini termasuk golongan bangunan yang dibangun oleh arsitek antara tahun 1900-1915. Segolongan dengan bangunan Javasche Bank (sekarang Bank Indonesia) yang didirikan tahun 1914, yang teletak di sebelah utara alun-alun, dan Palace Hotel (sekarang Hotel Pelangi) didirikan tahun 1916 yang terletak di sebelah selatan alun-alun...
