An old time Rawon specialist restaurant in Malang. Authentic from "Nguling" village.
This place ia always crowded, even in the morning. And they have prepared a large dining space from the front area all the way back.
The atmosphere is like a restaurant from 70s/80s. Service is quick and straight to the point. I love the basa basi from the waiters, and the waybtgey describe the menu.
Top dishes: rawon dengkul (cow knee) and rawon buntut (ox tail). Larger portion than the regular rawon daging.
I ordered rawon buntut and they also provided gorengan (perkedel, babat, empal and tempe. Pay what you take (of course).
The broth was refreshing, the ox tail meat was so tender and hearty. The bean sprout added made it even nicer. You should make it even better by adding squeezed fresh lime and boiled duck egg. It is a must! (for me) 😁
The sambal was mild (for Indonesian I guess), so you can enjoy the flavour fully.
I was tempted to grab empal (fried beef) but I couldn't help wondering why people was asking their tempe, here and there. Even some asked for take away.
Tempe? Take away?
So I took the tempe instead. Big square cut and the bean was so packed and the taste: so GOOD!
I am usually not paying that much attention to tempe. It is usually as good as it is. But this, is THE BEST TEMPE I've ever taste. I can eat this tempe all day long. Crunchy outside, and soft in the inside.
I am not kidding. If you think you know tempe, but you haven't tried Rawon Nguling's tempe, then you don't.
Price wise: affordable, and the taste is just so good. 🥰
I didn't even think about no air-con, the original experience is the real deal. That TEMPE, damn, I keep thinking about it. 🙄
If you go to Malang, you should enjoy Tempe and Rawon here. Highly...
Read more"It has been 3 weeks since I came here, and the taste is still lingering in my mouth" - thats what I always said to my wife. Their rawon was really really great. They're well known for their rawon since a long time ago. They serve 3 kind of rawon if I'm not mistaken. Kikil, tail and meat. When you order the kikil or tail, be aware of their portion. The portion can be eaten for 2-3 person, and if you choose kikil or tendon, it doesn't have any meat in it. So if you rather eat meet just order the single portion meat rawon. They will give you a plate of fried organs and other kind (lungs, brain, tempeh, potato fritters), I didn't eat any of the organ because of my "scare of cholesterol", but the babat looks appetizing. I do get one of their perkedel or potato fritters and it contains meat in it. The salted egg will not be on the menu, so you need to ask the waiter/waiterrsses for some "telor asin". Will definitely go back there again if I go the Malang...
Read moreThe taste is OK and the black beef stew is served with condiment in separate plate. The place is too small to accommodate the crowd who queued for long time to get the seat. Do not be sad if you are not able to get seat for dine in. You have to remember that Malang is Beef Black Soup (Rawon) Heaven. You can find many alternate places to get delicious rawon such as Rawon Brintix, Rawon Train Station, Knee Rawon (Rawon Dengkul), Rawon at Bhuk Rice Stalls at Jl Kawi Upper, Rawon Subuh, Rawon Rampal, Rawon Tessy and so many more. You will have the opportunity to have quality time to enjoy your food peacefully. Rawon is not always be Nguling Rawon.
I have visited again on 8 June 2019 to enjoy the beef stew and "lodeh'. My conclusion that the taste were very light and totally different than their cooking long time ago. Not comparable to their competitors (Rawon Rampal and other).
I really miss the real Rawon Nguling that already gone since more than...
