Traditional must try food. Available only in Semarang.
If you visit Semarang and looking for a local traditional food, this is it. Nasi ayam or Chicken rice in English. You can only find nasi ayam in Semarang. You might find some similar dish outside Semarang, but it’s actually different.
Nasi ayam Bu Pini has been well known amongst the locals. A lady will serve the orders while sit low in front of a low table, surrounded by some pans or bowls of shredded chicken, simmered boiled eggs, and some thick soup with sliced pumpkins. All those will be put on top of the rice. You can choose to sit at a normal height dining tables, or to sit low, in front of the lady. Available portion half or full. But I am strongly believe you won’t get enough if you only order a half portion. In addition, you can add extra condiments like satays or fried tofu. You can also add some thick coconut soup, which will enrich the taste of the nasi ayam. This thick soup available on the dining table. Free to add to your nasi ayam.
If you highly concern about hygiene, this might not suit you. As the locals get used to dip their satay into the thick coconut soup. Or to keep all the extra condiments on top of the table only covered by a piece of paper. However, all customers who eat here already have a collective understanding to keep those clean and not double dipping their satay into the thick soup.
Price also super affordable. Staffs are nice and pretty.

Read moreOkay turns out this place is surprisingly delicious. It is so affordable with one bowl only costing Rp12k. So what is this food they are exactly selling you might ask? This dish is basically chicken on top of rice with some coconut milk broth drizzled on top of it which is exactly delicious. The savoury and flavourful spiced soup is amazing. The portion might be quite small but you can add on additional toppings such as the satay. You can also ask for additional shredded chicken or omit krecek which is basically cattle skin. Locals really love this krecek so we decided to try it and at first it might taste off putting due to the texture but we try to convince ourselves that it...
