A Delicious Discovery in Gili – Pawon Gili
During my stay in Gili, I stumbled upon a true hidden gem: Pawon Gili. Tucked away on a quiet street, far from the tourist crowds, this charming spot offers a genuinely authentic Indonesian dining experience – full of flavor, warmth, and soul.
Dinner was simply delicious. I went for a traditional nasi campur, and every bite was a perfect balance of spices, textures, and fresh ingredients. Each component of the dish had its own character, yet everything came together in perfect harmony.
The atmosphere at Pawon Gili is equally special – cozy, laid-back, and decorated in a way that feels both simple and true to local culture. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, taking time to explain the dishes and making the whole experience feel personal and memorable.
If you’re looking to escape the typical tourist restaurants and try something real, Pawon Gili is a must-visit. A beautiful blend of taste, culture, and kindness – hands down one of the best meals I had in Gili.

Read moreHad an interesting experience here. Not feeling well so I asked for plain tempeh, tofu, rice, an egg and some satay sauce to the side. I received deep fried tempeh and tofu (definitely not good for a bad belly so I peeled it off 😆), no satay sauce and 2-3 eggs? The portion was huge. All the meals were 20-35k so I assumed this would be the same. I also got a drink but I planned on tipping them as I do want to support locals, however when I got the bill it came to 68k!! I wondered how, and they had charged 35k for the rice and tofu/tempeh but 20k for the eggs!! And I didn’t even want this many eggs (just one). I wasn’t annoyed at the dish being different due to the language barrier but I did feel like they tried to overcharge me which for me ruined the experience. I think I would still recommend the restaurant just make sure you pick from the menu and don’t ask for any adjustments 🫣 lots of vegetarian options and...
Read moreI came here twice for their good Rawon! It's really authentic (East java taste) I'm living in Bali and it's really hard to find authentic Rawon from East Java. I found it in Gili!!! What a day! This comfort food goes really well when it's raining.
For foreigners Rawon is black beef soup, typically of comfort food that is legit with unique spices they used. It's called Keluwek in Java,or famous as black nut. This ingredient makes the soup look so black and scary in away hehehe. This spice comes from the seeds of the Pangium tree. The nut has a unique taste that is often described as a mix of chocolate, coffee, and earthy notes. And.... Yet the dish has been found on an old manuscript called Taji (901 BC). Is very Indonesian's authentic soup. You...
