We had a lovely stay in the Clayton Hotel Limerick recently. Booked last minute and got a great price. We had 2 small children (4 and 2) who were very excited to enjoy the hotel and facilities.
Room was perfect. Beds were comfortable. Room was clean and had everything we needed. It had amazing views of the River Shannon and the everlasting skies!
Pool was lovely also. It was clean, a tad chilly, but really nice. On the 1st floor so it again had great sky views and also views of the River Shannon that surrounded us.
Restaurant for breakfast was really good. Down on the river with great views. Food was excellent and they provided anything extra we needed in a flash. One staff member Hassan Ben Kalifa (apologies for the misspelling) was excellent. He was really, attentive, super busy and run off his feet making sure the place ran well. Could not say enough for how accommodating he was to us.
Bar & Grill restaurant again had great views, great food and very clean and modern. However the Manager of the restaurant was NOT warm and welcoming. On our first night, at 6pm he had no table for us because it was full. He could not recommend anything for us locally as "everything would be booked out" and could not offer room service. On leaving the hotel with our two small kids in the dark and heading into an unknown city, we found a Dominos pizza just round the corner, and another hotel Limerick City Hotel two blocks away that were happy to take us, and had plenty of space and good food. We were so upset that the restaurant manager had been so rude and unwelcoming, given that he could clearly see we had small kids and were at a loss as to what to feed them at such a late hour for us.
We made a booking in the Bar & Grill for the following evening and asked for a window seat and pointed to where we were talking about which had booth style couch seating that would have suited the kids better. He said, he'd see what he could do. We were the first on the reservation list! The next evening, we felt relieved not to meet the restaurant manager again, but when the staff member showed us to our table it was in the middle of the room, not at the window or a booth seat. There were a few tables we could have been moved to and it was only 5.30pm. The staff member said he would ask the manager, and so the unfriendly manger appeared and said NO. Someone else had specifically asked for that window table etc. We were fuming. Again he was so rude. So had we "specifically asked". We were put down the back of the restaurant, where we realised all the families were placed. So we just sucked it up and tried not to let his rudeness affect our lovely stay. It is understandable that they may have wanted noisy kids away from everyone else, but he could have covered it up a bit better at least! We were made feel so unwelcome :( I have to say as an Irish person and as someone from the tourism industry, I would hate for an international visitor to experience the "Irish Welcome" from that restaurant manager. He definitely needs to go back to hospitality training. This might sound like nothing to someone without kids, but the smallest things like dinner are of utmost importance to keep them happy and settled so as not to disturb other guests.
The rest of the restaurant staff were young college students and disorganised at times. We waited a long time for our dessert menus and the bill. But in general that was all fine.
Overall, forgetting about our bad restaurant experience, this was a lovely hotel to stay in and I would highly recommend breakfast...
Read moreI stayed here for 1 week.
Pros: The views are great and it's quiet since it's isolated from the city (and if you're on a high floor). The staff are super friendly and helpful. They helped me get a nice room with a nice view of the river and the city. The lobby is nice and modern. The restaurant and bar seemed busy, and the food was decent, although I preferred to explore the local food and restaurants more. The location is extremely convenient to downtown, including long-distance bus services to Dublin airport. They have a gym and spa The upper floors are quiet The AC is external to the building, so there's minimal noise to you as a guest when you turn it on. The rooms are modern and clean The service is always very attentive, prompt, and friendly The room TVs are set to not have bass sound, which is a good thing for everyone! The 'steamboat garage' parking is about a 20 meter walk away, and for 1 week it was 22 euros. There was plenty of parking on all days. Talk to the hotel reception if you are parking after 10pm since the garage gate closes at that time.
Cons: The room front doors aren't quite soundproof enough, and we and other guests had to slam our doors to close them properly. The bathroom fan didn't work and so the fire alarm went off, and the bathroom is then foggy for an hour and has a moisture problem. I could hear our neighbors talking in their bedrooms. Fortunately they weren't always there or that loud all the time. It's a bit ridiculous that the spa closes at 9pm on weekdays and 7pm weekends/holidays, and that they require a plastic cap for swimming (2.50e per rental). The hotel's amenity or breakfast hours aren't friendly to night owls or those who are enjoying their evening elsewhere and want to relax in the spa before bed. It seems geared for working professionals or people who wake up at 7-8am daily, and not for vacationers who are sleeping in or having slow mornings. There was a wedding party using the hotel's party space on a Saturday night, which had thumping bass music that could be heard a bit up to my room on the 13th floor. I felt sorry for the guests on lower floors. The party space is on the northeast side of the building, so if you're sensitive to noise, you may consider a room on an upper floor and facing southwest. The bathrooms have very deep bathtubs with high walls, which can cause you to fall since there is nothing to really hold onto. I held onto the towel rack. For this reason, I do not recommend this hotel for elderly who are...
Read moreAnother great stay! It was our first time back with baby no3 so we were apprehensive how it would go. The staff were so accommodating which took a lot of pressure off us! The kids had a great time in the pool , leisure staff were so friendly as always but a special mention to Cormac. Our little girl Cara was full of chat and he was so nice to engage with her! She felt very important
We had a lovely girl Rebecca taking care of us at dinner each night , she was great to give us a good size area with room for the buggy. She was so good to the kids chatting with them and giving them pictures to colour. She even printed out different pictures for them for the second night they were delighted!
There was another male member of staff I never got his name but he was so good to my son James he was chatting sport with him. James lost a Liverpool bracelet the morning we left and this man gave so much time to help us try find it. And my daughter misplaced her bag of toys and he went back to our room to double check it wasn't there. He couldn't do enough for us. Absolutely going the extra mile it wasn't necessary but just seemed in his nature
The breakfast staff were very attentive -always checking on us if we needed anything. Again I never caught names as it was busy time for them. But we had a young girl with blonde hair looking after us each morning, she was so friendly and couldn't do enough for us and the kids.
The food as always was amazing and the place was spotless. We come back each time for the pool , food and the location but also because the staff are so good with our kids. It's very family friendly and that's the most important thing when travelling with kids. 2 adults and 3 kids in one room can be stressful but not once did we feel stressed and that's down to how the staff treated us. My other reviews always talk about the food or the cleanliness etc so I felt this time the staff should get more detailed mentioning as they are what keeps the place running smoothly! The kids are already asking when is...
