My family of 4 stayed at the Savoy in a family room over the weekend. Our experience was mixed, but more leaning towards disappointing. Firstly, I would like to say, this is not a 5 star hotel and would only be 4 star at a push. |I will comment on what was good:|1. The breakfast was amazing and there was great service at breakfast also|2. The room was a great size for our family of four|3. The cocktails are amazing! ||Now, the other side of things. We arrived and the room wasn't quite ready yet which was no problem as it was 2.30. We said to the girl we would go to the bar with the kids and wait and she was very nice and showed us the way. We stood waiting to be seated, a man (who looked very like a manager) looked towards us and walked past a few times. After a few minutes he came over and I explained our room wasn't ready and we wanted to have a drink while we were waiting. At this point he looked down at my two boys, who were quietly standing beside us, and said that he thinks we would be more comfortable in the library room as it has "more of a family vibe". I knew by him, he wasn't keen on having us in the bar although only one other couple were in there at the time. We walked across to the library room where some women were having afternoon tea and a man was playing the piano. Definitely NOT more of a family vibe. I asked the girl there could we get a drink and bite to eat while we were waiting. We were asked if we had a booking and when I said no, we were asked to wait in the lobby while they "prepared a table". Again, there were at loads of tables free, the only people in there were a bride and her friends having afternoon tea and one other couple. We waited with the kids in the lobby for ten min or so and I went back to check and we were told the table was ready. They had done nothing to the table. There was a lamp in the middle exactly as it had been ten minutes earlier. Why we were asked to wait in the lobby I do not know. Once inside the food was nice, our two boys enjoyed their meal and the waiters were lovely. Nobody else came in so it's not like they had to squeeze us in. ||After, our room was ready and we headed up to get changed for the pool. Our room was absolutely boiling, to the point where I opened all the windows and turned off the thermostat as it was on 20 degrees. We headed for the pool which is very small but granted we knew this when booking. Upon getting the boys changed and myself and husband changed we headed in. We met a man coming out with his daughter who said the pool was absolutely freezing and they couldn't get in. My husband asked a man who was working there about this and he said yes, the pool was broken, come back in 2 hrs. At this point we went back to the room and changed and took a walk out. 2.5 hrs later, the pool still wasn't fixed so we got changed for dinner and headed out to our booking at the Texas steak house (which was delicious). I closed the windows before we left and the thermostat was off. |When we returned we went to the executive lounge which we had booked with the boys and had a drink there before heading to bed at 10. The executive room is a great call for families. There are plenty of snacks, a TV and comfortable couches. A great call if you want a drink with the kids before bed. We ordered a cocktail each at the bar and brought them back to the lounge to drink them. |When we went back to the room, it was a sweatbox but the whole floor was the same as another couple commented on it to us also. The other floors didn't seem to experience the same problem. I will say straight up, we didn't call anyone about the problem which we should have in hindsight as we did not sleep a wink. We had to open windows and sleep with the noise levels outside. The next morning when we mentioned it we were told we should have called someone if we had a problem and I agree, we should have. It wasn't just our room though as the 5th floor itself was absolutely boiling so my advice if coming as a family (or as a couple) would be to avoid this floor. |The next morning we went down to the pool with the boys and the man told us it was fixed. It was not fixed! My husband rang reception who said there was a problem that would not be rectified for a while. Funnily enough since we got back we have spoken to a friend who stayed 6 weeks ago and the pool was also broken at this stage. Whether it has never been fixed or it keeps breaking with the same issue, I don't know. ||As mentioned above, we felt unwelcome with the boys. I'm not just saying this, but we do a quite a few hotel stays each year and our boys are well behaved (as much as any 7 year old twins are!!). ||This stay had both positives and negatives but we felt the negatives out weighted the positives. It would not be a hotel I would...
Read moreOur Executive Tour guide booked my family of 13 into 4- and 5-star hotels for our trip to Ireland to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary The Savoy was rated as a 5 Star hotel, but not in my experience. It was a great location, a very accommodating staff, excellent food, and nice sized rooms. We had 5 rooms for our four children and their families, and for my wife and I; 9 adults and 4 children in all. The family rooms each had 3 beds, which was great. They did however, forget to deliver the crib for the baby, which delayed her nap time.||Our disabled daughter was given what they described as an accessible room, but it turned into a disaster. Initially, my daughter called the front desk and complained about the glass shower door which was dragging on the floor making it difficult to open. It opened into the shower (not out for easier access) in such a way that she had to negotiate around the door in order to shower – not easy for a disabled person. She also asked if they could send a shower chair - the shower chair had no rubber feet making it a skateboard on the tile floor. I was in the room when housekeeping arrived with the chair, and the housekeeper tried to fix the door but was unable. At this time, the management should have transferred my daughter to another room.|When our daughter went to use the shower after returning from dinner, the mixing valve came off in her hand. When she flushed the toilet, the flusher valve fell off the wall. Needless to say, the room turned out to be more disabled than my daughter. 4 times the first night she had hotel staff in her room to remedy the problems but they were unsuccessful. A TRUE 5 star hotel would never have put a disabled person in that room, which they said was accessible, but would surely have moved her after the first issue came up. Only after I made a stink at the front desk the following morning did they agree to give her a new room. This turned out to be a proper accessible room for someone who is disabled, although the exhaust fan was falling out of the ceiling and the staff shoved some tissue paper in the hole to keep it from falling onto the floor.|The temperature control for the in-room HVAC in all of the rooms had no operating instructions and was difficult to maneuver – this caused several rooms to be uncomfortable to the point where 2 had fans delivered to help move the air in the room. And the carpeting in my room was in need of a good cleaning – quite a lot of ground in dirt. The area near the pool on the lower level was in desperate need of a sweeping and tidying up the day we used it.|At least the hotel offered a bottle of wine (cheap) and chocolates for the discomfort afforded my daughter.|I will surely let my tour operator know of this and if I return to Limerick, it will be to a different hotel. I did not mind paying the big money for a 5 star hotel for a trip like this, but I expect a 5 STAR experience for everyone...
Read moreFancy appearance Hotel and great location.
Reception check in service - Excellent. Public area- dirty public area bathrooms (1 floor) public area requires greater maintenance due to the flow of users. Room- I stayed in room 607 and I thought it was a great size. Great size twin beds. Pillows just okay. Mattress a little uncomfortable (spring mattress). Shower water only warm, not hot. Even in a hostel hot water is a basic service. Big fails in this.
Situations 1- I went to the reception to ask if there was any toiletry available for the bathtub (salts, foam...), generally 5 star hotels have some Toiletry options that can be requested by the guest. Receptionist (I believe he is of Indian origin, sorry I don't remember the name), requested online and asked to wait in the room. A staff was sent to me with two toilet papers in their hands, who neither spoke nor understood English. I said it wasn't what I asked for and I showed her the bathtub, she said wait and no one came back and provided what I asked for, or at least give me feedback. Big fail for 5 star hotel service.
2- We went for a walk at 10:30am and I left the signal to clean the room and there was a housekeeper in the hallway who saw us leaving, when we returned at 1:35pm the room had not been cleaned. I asked the housekeeper who was cleaning a room ahead what I needed and said I didn't need to clean any more as I would be in the room for a while. He said my room wasn't on his list. Anyway, when I went out to get something from the reception about 30 minutes later he was already cleaning the room next to my and an Asian staff member was at the door talking to him angrily and with an ugly face for me. I believe he must have reported what happened and she didn't like it, maybe. In any category of hotel, there are supervisors who are paid exactly to check the rooms as well as the signs on the door so that the rooms are cleaned when requested. (It doesn't have to be immediate, but 3 hours later should, If there was a good not perfect supervisor service in the hotel). As it is a 5-star hotel, this type of service must be excellent and, above all, without angry faces at guests who pay for accommodation with cleaning service included. Unpleasant situation.
So, after traveling to more than 50 countries and staying in several hotels, for me, it is a 3 star hotel classified as 5 stars. 5 stars hotel is not just a fancy space but an excellent basic...
