Took the high ratings and good reviews at face value, and couldn’t have been more wrong. Now let’s get things straight - we were starving and ate the lot, but this is how it went down…

We started with a shrimp taco and I’ll admit the prawns on it were ok, but then there was the rest - a lacklustre scattering of unseasoned cherry tomatoes and rocket leaves on a crispy taco shell that became the only thing detectable in the dish.

Then we moved onto a mortadella tortellini “pasta” dish that surprisingly was made with both meat as the actual pasta AND the filling. It was a salty, mushy, uniform meat dumpling that disappointed until the end. I’m very confused as to who thought this would be a good idea after taste testing it, great meat origami skills yes - but otherwise it was just outstandingly awful to eat. There is no point filling some ham with some more dry meat and boiling it, it’s strange they thought this was worth attempting.

Then finished with stewed octopus, and that’s when it clicked, and I realised we should have left after the shrimp taco hit the table. An overcooked bland inner tube that may have once been near a puddle, swimming in a broth that might as well have been made of rusty rainwater with a hint of Bisto.

So unless that’s your thing, maybe avoid for some more traditional and less “modern” food from 1992.

Oh, and skip the...

Tucked away in a small side street just a few minutes walk from San Lorenzo Cathedral, this little restaurant can hold its own against all the Mich…-star restaurants I have visited anywhere in the world, but at a fraction of M-starred prices. It respects the local cuisine, but elevates it with creative flare, healthier ingredients, and tastes I would never have thought go together. But then I said, “Why didn’t anyone think of this combo of flavors before?!” The shrimp “taco” (not what I imagined) was off the charts, as was everything else plus all of the staff. The clams were fantastic and the mango dessert should win international awards. I don’t know what this restaurant is doing hiding in Genova. You would never be able get a table if it was in Paris, London, or New York. I rate Cibus13 6...

A display of stopped clocks on the wall in one of the dinning areas of Cibus13 gently reminds the diners to take time to enjoy the food, the wine, and each other. At least that is my interpretation. And, it makes sense. The food is amazing, creative, and molto delizioso. For example my husband had a starter that consisted of a taco with avocado salad, shrimp, and melon ice-cream. And, my main was a salted cod cannoli with potatoes, French beans, Burrata cheese and pesto sauce. The service is friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. And, Cibus has a good selection of mostly local wines. I highly recommend Cibus if you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary.

High-end food and experience at a reasonable price. We had the clam and pistachio pesto spaghettone, and a ragù dish (apologies that I don’t recall the exact name), followed by the panna cotta, and every one was delicious. Complimentary bread basket all freshly made and also excellent. Great depth of flavour and a nice edge of modernity to traditional dishes. The staff gave good advice on wine pairings and were in general knowledgeable and very friendly. Would definitely return. We were seated immediately without reservation.
