Everyone has a best-pizza-they've-had narrative. Mine involves Pizzeria Spontini in Milan. I'm rather amused to see it fairly low on (although #600-odd out of 4000-odd may be high depending on how one looks at it) the list of eating experiences in Milan on Tripadvisor. Anyway, we were here on a Friday night at what must have been peak hour for we had to wait for a bit (not more than 20-30 mins) before we got our table.
The menu seemed dispiritingly simple at first glance. I'd hoped to have a vast array of options and yet this turned out to be the best thing about the place. There is nothing else to be had here but the impossibly yummy Margherita slices! No point in deliberating too much. When we had the first one, we had no idea we were going to have a second and then a third slice (huge ones each of them). Mind you, we were on a strict food budget with only one meal a day exceeding 10 Eur per person. Here, it must have been 15-20 Eur per person and still none of us could care.
Those better acquainted with Milan might be able to point the way to better Pizzerias and I'm unqualified to make an all-encompassing comment there. Hard to see how anyone with the time can ignore this though. The lane in which it is situated can seem a touch shady late in the night so it might be more prudent to stick to the Corso Buenos Aires (main road) underneath which the subway service runs. That brings me to its accessibility. At just about 300 metres from either of the two subway stations it lies between (Lima and Rovereto), it scores high on access as well.
Perhaps the sole issue would be its tiny tables and general lack of room within the restaurant but I guess that is a privilege established names can afford for they know they have patrons regardless of whether they...
Read moreThe pizza was surprisingly good even after taking it out and walking two kilometers to the hotel. Except for the service, who racially profiled us. I can’t think of any other reason for the rudeness we encountered yesterday. Being Asian and first time in Italy. I stood in front of the counter deciding what to try. A waiter came up to me asking if I was going to order or not. I just said take out since we were busy walking the avenue with my 9yr old. But after we got the slice, my daughter decided to enjoy the pizza sitting down. So we sat down in one of the aeats outside and opened the box. The same waiter rushed to our table and said we cannot eat it there. The pizza came from their place! I said my daughter had a change of mind! He insisted eventhough this was at 19:25 and it wasn’t full at all. He proceeded by saying there’s a table charge of 1 euro per person if I wanted to stay there. In disgust, we just stood up and left. My daughter liked the pizza, if we tasted it before he kicked us out we would have eaten our entire dinner there, as we just wanted to check out the Nike store nearby before heading out to dinner. Our experience on our first day is a contrast to the welcomeness we experienced at other places. Pizza isn’t cheap at 5.50 per slice. But the...
