This is THE hidden gem of Napoli. A little out of the main thoroughfare but in the heart of all the fresh vegetable, seafood and meat markets of the older quarter. A local recommended this to us as an excellent example of classic Napoli cuisine. Get the house wine—it’s family-made. The white has notes of pear, marshmallow and citrus with no sweet aftertaste, just a clean, crisp finish. Service is impeccable, starting with a small complimentary glass of bright Prosecco and a two-bite appetizer (ours were cheese and pasta croquettes). The menu (in Italian and English) is extensive, but you should take advice from the server as to what is best today—because they are shopping at all the little specialty markets nearby, of course. My husband had a seafood pasta dish (clams, mussels), and I chose the ragu with mozzarella in red sauce with fresh basil. Both were beautifully presented and tasted even better, with complimentary fresh bread. We finished with desserts—fantastic tiramisu and the lightest, most delicate lemon cream cake—and a selection of three house-made artisanal digestifs (an herbal concoction like a jenape, orange crème and limoncello, of course). Image our surprise when our host dropped off more limoncello on the house! We ate a lovely slow meal, listening to classic jazz, admiring the old architecture of the larger-than-normal space (for Naples) and paid 65 euros—in the Midwest of the US (our home base) this would easily be a $150-200 meal experience. The only thing I would change is to turn off (or remove) the little corner television (there was no sound, but it seems so out of place in such a classical restaurant). I think another review is actually for a different restaurant, because we had no problem paying by card, and unless you have no taste buds you cannot describe this food as average. Check their hours before you go—we made the seating that starts at 7 pm in the off-season without reservations, but in high season I imagine these 12 or so tables (inside and an enclosed patio on a quiet side street) are constantly filled. If I ever have to chance to come here again, my first and last meals will be at Bencott.

Tourists, avoid at ALL costs. The locals and tourists are given 2 completely different menus and the difference in pricing is the biggest rort I have ever seen. My bf and I walked into the restaurant because we could see 2 Italians eating a simple dish, just pasta and tomato sauce. When we went to order, we were told that the dish was on a separate menu and we could not order it. My bf insisted it’s the only thing he wanted, so the male waiter came back and said yes, the chef would make it for him. Later, an Italian couple sat beside us and were given a white sheet menu with all very affordable dishes, about 10€ or less. We took a look at it and saw that his dish was about 6-7€. When we received the bill (a piece of paper with handwritten items with price), they had charged us 3 x the price for that same dish we saw on the secret local menu. My bf confronted them saying, it is fine to charge tourists more, but 3x the price is too much. Given that the item he had was not on the tourist menu, they had just made up a price for him. The male waiter became aggressive very quickly, yelling at us saying “why did you look at that menu? That menu is not for you, so why did you look?” He was visibly very upset. We didn’t expect such aggression but said that we will pay, but were very unhappy about it. An Italian man who was talking to the female owner came up very gently to my bf to tell him it is best to leave. And after reading all the older reviews about aggression, I can understand why he did. Tourists, *avoid at ALL costs*, there is amazing pasta all over Naples, choose something more fair. Ps. Look at the dish in the picture that my bf paid more than 20€ for (top dish) We can’t help but laugh a little now.

Our highlight of the trip.. definitely the best restaurant in Naples. Miaaaam. Thank you soooo much! You can taste the love in the cooking big time.. We tried the eggplant parmigiana that was just to die for (a little smoked and just melted in your mouth), the pasta with baby octopus… (the best tomato sauce I’ve had in Italy!), the 4 cheese risotto of the day (delish!) and even the grilled chicken for our daughter was just so juicy and tasty! She even had all the brócoli, it was cooked to perfection! I read that portions were “small”, they are anything but small!! Prices are also really decent and the menu has so many options (fish, pasta, etc). I was a little hesitant due to the reviews from 3 years ago but maybe they changed owners, they were super lovely with us. Loved the service! Thank you so much for such a delicious experience that will remain in our minds (and bellies hehe)

A quel punto lui inizia a prendermi in giro farfugliando cose. Io venivo tutti i giorni qui..."
