Ristorante Pizzeria Il Timone — Restaurant in Ponza

We dined in Rome at several wonderful quality restaurants over a four day period, then Ventotene and to Ponza. My girlfriend lived and worked in Rome for nearly 10 years and she knows fine food and wine. We were introduced to Il Timone and found some of the best meals we had in nearly two weeks of travel. We stayed on Ponza four days and our first night dining at a fine restaurant that is probably the most expensive high end place on the island. Five start service and all of that, terrific food ambience etc.... But Il Timone we dined at three times following, we found it to be the most authentic to the island the people and history of food on Ponza. The Family run establishment is what seekers of really great food and wine wish to experience. Danielle and his Uncle and Mother are delightful hosts that give you the feeling you were at their home in the kitchen for an intimate visit. This was our favorite place for dinner and especially the pizza, in Ponza. The staff is absolutely wonderful and the food is always amazingly delicious!

My friend is from Florence and I’m from New York and I’ll admit we can be picky. This place always served excellent food with a stunning view of the water, great atmosphere, and stellar service.

At our last dinner here, I discreetly paid the tab. Although I speak very little Italian, the staff understood when I handed them my credit card and put my finger in front of my lips.

After I paid, my friend unexpectedly ordered a digestive drink and asked for the check. I was trying to figure out how to slip my card to the staff for the drink, when they saw me and said not to worry, that the drink is on the house!

Io e le mie due amiche abbiamo cenato qui un paio di sere fa. Siamo arrivate alle 19.30, i tavoli erano tutti vuoti ma ci hanno chiesto di tornare un'ora dopo. Tornate quindi alle 20.30, abbiamo dovuto aspettare un'altra mezz'ora per ordinare. Abbiamo chiesto un fritto misto (20€) e tre pizze (margherita 10€, mortadella pistacchio e provola 14€, e pesto e pachino 14€). Dopo un'altra mezz'ora sono finalmente arrivate le pizze e, subito dopo, il fritto misto, obbligandoci così a mangiare pizza e fritto misto insieme, onde evitare che quest'ultimo si freddasse. Le pizze erano molto buone, ma il fritto misto, oltre ad avere un aspetto un po' triste (vedi gli anelli di calamaro troppo cotti e striminziti), era anche eccessivamente scarso, un quantità davvero esigua visto il caro prezzo. Abbiamo poi chiesto il conto, che dopo un quarto d'ora non era ancora arrivato. Ci siamo allora alzate per chiederlo direttamente al bancone, ed è lì che abbiamo assistito a una scena davvero pietosa. Un uomo uscito dalla cucina (probabilmente il proprietario o lo chef) ha cominciato a sgridare e umiliare (con tanto di parolacce) una cameriera e altri elementi del suo personale, il tutto davanti a noi clienti. Un comportamento non solo umanamente avvilente, ma anche assolutamente non professionale, che rispecchia la disorganizzazione generale e la poca cura...
