TL;DR: Plan your way back ahead! this is worth every effort! Don't miss it! They all speak perfect english.
Rome was in absolute mayhem when we visited-Champions League madness, Circus Maxus closed, buses canceled, and massive protests blocking streets. After fighting through the chaos in a taxi to Via Appia Antica, we stepped into what felt like another world.
The owner greeted us with warmth and humor, setting the tone for the evening. Unlike the hectic city center, the terrace was serene-it was just our table and one other-making it the perfect escape.
Ignore any negative reviews claiming this place feels "artificial." The owner's passion is real, from the way he shares stories (like the history behind the ancient cheese spread) to how he happily accommodates special requests we both had. This isn't a tourist gimmick-it's a genuine love for reviving Rome's forgotten flavors and sharing his passion with the guests.
The food? Extraordinary. The tomato-less lasagna (straight from Apicius' ancient recipes) was so good I wished I had another plate. Must-try: The ancient wine pairing-it elevates the whole experience. Sadly I orded it after the food.
Every dish came with a tale, transporting us further back in time. As our last night in Rome, this wasn't just dinner to wrap things up-it was the perfect finale, a true cherry on top.
We recommend the place to everyone that comes to rome and is interested in a little historical time travel. But i advice everyone to plan their way back in advance as it is far out and public transport tends to become unreliable...
Read moreHosteria Antica Roma My husband and I used to frequent this restaurant 20 years ago when we lived in Rome. We even held our son’s Baptism Reception in the beautiful garden area. We had such lovely memories of Osteria Antica Roma with its exquisite food, its beautiful, historical location and warm hospitality. We were a bit hesitant to return since so much time had passed, we thought we might be disappointed. However, we decided to take our chances and made a reservation –and we were so glad that we did. We were NOT disappointed! The owners Signor Massimo and his son, Chef Paolo, improved on what was an already an outstanding restaurant. The restaurant changed to a bigger location (always on Via Appia Antica), so now there is even more to appreciate! It was such a unique, unforgettable, and delicious dining experience. Chef Paolo is fluent in English, cultured and well-travelled. He is as passionate about food as he is in the history of what the Ancient Roman aristocrats ate. He shared that knowledge with us with the presentation of each dish—which was a delightful dimension to the meal. We look forward to our next visit to Hostaria Antica Roma—which will...
Read moreWe found this place after a long, treacherous walk along the Appian Way. We really needed something to drink and eat, so this was a welcome site! It was set back past a couple of other eateries, but there were clear signs sending us through a lovely garden toward the grounds of this very old restaurant. The vibe was fancy, and the menu was very different. Supposedly, they had some items that were made from recipes taken from the very first ever printed cookbook. If that is true, that's pretty historical! Of course, we had to try some of those, included the most delicious desserts we've ever eaten! The waiter, who is the owner's son, gets up and tells stories to the people dining, so be prepared to be entertained. When I told him I was trying to learn Italian, his father, who spoke almost no English and is in his 80's, came and gave me a poster of the historical castle-like structure that is right on the grounds of this restaurant that, like most things in Rome, is extremely old and full of rich history. Quite a friendly bunch! We had two main courses, two desserts, and appetizer, and a bottle of prosecco...
