What is Sicilian pizza? Does the wood make it good? That's the age old question of pizza makers, from before there was a choice. It can make a flavour complexity that is delicious, but there are risks. The oven will achieve great temperatures, which helps, but the heat can be uneven, or at least require a steady eye on the pizza. Sicilian pizza is distinguished by a crust that's fluffier and thicker than what you may be used to. It should have a tear quality in the dough that makes it viscous, almost like a great bubble gum. A few km away, makari Cafe delivers this brilliantly and consistently, albeit from an electric oven. Unfortunately here, there are problems. The dough has a dry, inelastic, bread like quality, more like the stunning pane Siciliana that can be found here. But in pizza, this quality takes all the fun out of the pizza. It can happen if the gluten is reduced by over working when mixed, or just too low protein in the flour. This pizza was overcooked, just 30 seconds...but thats all it takes. The sugo had dried, the oregano close to burnt, and the whole thing became unappetising. Neverthess, I ate it. I was hungry. I'm a reviewer. I give f2f feedback, if asked. Places that care, ask. I'm sure more visits could reap benefits. It may be a 1 off. But the locals at the tables around me were leaving large amounts of their pizza crusts aside. That's not unusual per se. But it might be indicative. It's a 5km drive to makari Cafe....

This review is regarding the restaurant part. We went here for dinner and had some drinks.

Good beers and also some other nice alcoholic drinks. Just what you want when you are on a holiday.

We all chose pizzas and all of them were very much liked. The oldest child stated that this was the second best during our Sicilië tour over the last 2 weeks. Therefore 5 stars. Well deserved.

Then the service. It was pleasant and good. English was spoken, but they also let me try to order in ununderstandable italian. Always appreciated! Cleanliness of the toilets: good. A rare exception during the last two weeks 👍

Then the atmosphere. Also that was very good. Where great 80s classics were played as background music.

To be short:...

Unfortunately we had a bad experience at this restaurant. There was only one person taking orders, serving, doing the bills whilst also taking take away orders. They were doing their best, but this meant a long wait to be seated (which in retrospect, should have been our cue to go somewhere else). We then waited over 30 minutes for an order to be taken - but this never happened. We decided to go inside to order take away instead, but that took a long time too. We then ended up waited another 30 minutes for take away. We arrived at 8.15pm and got pizza around 9.45pm.

The pizza themselves were fair, but the experience was very bad. I would recommend you try...

Need food - first thought - Ohana - after ordering we were offered best service ever - would you like to keep your alcohol in a fridge while you wait for your take away pizza? Best service ever Best pizza in Sicily! Nothing less an much more :)

Beautiful and cozy place with delightful personnel. They showed us what was homemade food and recommended us their salad and as dessert a frozen cream with almonds 😋 Had some pleasant talks with the server about the language. Trying to learn menu items and at the goodbyes we taught some quick words of Hollands. 'Slaap lekker!' 'Sleep well' 👋
