Bacaretto Cicchetto — Restaurant in Venice

Save your money and go elsewhere. What a nightmare this “pre fixed” New Years dinner was. Nobody knew beforehand that it’d be pre fixed, nowhere on the website or anything. We arrived in Venice excited for pasta, pizza, and spritz. We got none of those. This pre fixed dinner first off was outrageously overpriced at 80€ a person. Now we get into the food and drink. Wine was good, that’s the only thing that was good. First course was some flavorless couscous with mushrooms on top. Second course they tried to serve us beef patties as tartar, but we declined due to health concerns. 3rd course was decent, it was some gnocchi, but who serves the most filling “pasta” for a 5 course meal? Hardly ate half of it, if I had eaten all of it I’d be full. 4th course was a filet, this made the price seem somewhat worth it but the steak that I got was near raw, flavorless, with a flavorless sauce (thank god for salt). And finally, we arrive to the 5th course, which should have been a mascarpone based dessert as per their “fixed menu”. But no, we got some sort of sponge cake out of a plastic wrapping with some chocolate drizzle on top. All in all we had to pay 460€ for 5 people. We left feeling ripped off and taken advantage of. Horrible experience. We had a reservation for new years eve. It started with the reservation itself. We had to leave 20€ behind for them as assurance that we would really come. Very unconventional, but ok. On the new years eve the bad surprise. Shortly after we took our seat the couple behind us stood up and left the restaurant. And then we knew the reason why: Instead of the usual menu we were handed a menu with a single choice including 5 courses, which should cost 80€ per person. We asked for the usual menu but were told that it would not be available. The day before we received no warning, no nothing. Unfortunately we already ordered some water. So instead of the 20€ we only received 10€ back. When we left another group of 6 people were discussing with the waiter aswell and left immediately with us. On the way out we were talking with them about this madness and another group entering the restaurant overheard us talking and turned right around and left aswell. So great job at losing about 15 customers from 4 different groups in under 5 minutes. Never will I visit this place again and I recommend you to do the same. Reading the reviews it is difficult for me to understand how this restaurant is so well rated. I don't usually leave negative reviews but our experience was nothing like the ones I am reading here when we visited in April. We were hurried through despite the restaurant not being too busy (about 50% capacity when we arrived), to the extent that our main meals were being brought out while we were still eating the seafood starter, which they tried to take before we were finished. If you don't want people in your restaurant later in the evening, then why accept our booking?

The starter (photo attached) was great and the seafood was very fresh, but the main meals were below average and again we were pressured to eat fast, which I don't understand as there were still some tables eating. Then, a staff member made a comment that we had not ordered drinks, except we had and he had forgotten to bring them. Finally, at the end, we were told it would be preferable if we paid in cash. This was not mentioned at all beforehand, and the restaurant takes card payments, so we found this an odd request that was never really explained.
