Essentially, there are a few markets situated next to each other with stores also selling seafood and restaurants in the alleys surrounding these markets. There is the Donburi market, Hakodate Morning Market, Salted item market, Market Square, all next to each other. To browse properly, you may need to walk up to an hour. You can buy anything seafood related, live Crabs, frozen seafood, preserved seafood, fruits, condiments, sweets and candies, even souvenirs. Besides a whole selection of sushi and Donburi restaurants, there is also a food court with up to ten stalls offering affordable seafood rice bowls, ramen, barbeque seafood and more. You can also buy fresh and live seafood from the market stalls and consume them here. Usually the alley stores with their own restaurant are pricier than the market and food court ones. Still, in the restaurant you eat in comfort while in the food court you may risk having no available table. Also you will be expected to clean up after yourselves and eating crabs can be a nasty affair. Most stall owners are helpful if you purchase from them, and there are two toilet areas just next to the food court that you can clean up. Still, be sure to bring your own wet tissues.
