disappointed. please forget Japanese local management.
I stayed as a SPG platinum guest and disappointed because of their lack of recognition.
Unlike other Four Points world wide, I was never able to feel international standard in both hardware and software as a SPG hotel, especially Four Points brand.
To the GM, read them and try to reform as soon as possible.
One reason is because staff are not well educated as standard of SPG staff. They told me that they are completely the same member of former hotel here, which was a Japanese local business hotel. Their explanation tend to be different each other. Some were possibly good but others were no good. I mean staff quality varies very much.
I stayed more than 10 nights this time, but finally I never knew GM name.
No welcome hearty atmosphere but very business-like treatments from the staff. No welcome letter nor welcome sweets in my room. Never seen GM name in my 12 days stay
2.They told me upgraded to a large room, but it was 18 sqm. At this property, 15 sqm is standard and 18 sqm is large room. Very small comparing to international standard.
At 18 sqm room, moisture after bathing never went out and window got formation of condensation like a flood. I asked font desk, one staff told me that "It can be controlled by the switch" but nothing happened and other staff told me that "It can't be controlled, sorry" Not only this matter, each staff saying was different such as breakfast explanation and more and more.
Huge group of Chinese gathered at the lobby area. At this time, normal guests never able to use the lift at least more than 20 minutes.
Earier time at the breakast place, huge group of Chinese gathered there.
Very smoky around the breakfast buffet table everyday despite this is non-smoking hotel. I asked a staff why. She told me that "It will come from smoking place outside"
I felt their duct system has a problem which caused 3 and 6 above. Why not notice it by the staff?
Rooms are almost everyday full, so SPG platinum member will not able to get obvious upgrade even I stayed 12 days altogether. Especially never suite room provided.
They have two views toward Mt Hakodate and Hakodate station. Basically here, Mt Hakodate side is nicer view because the mount is the symbol of Hakodate. However, they have less larger rooms on the side and mostly small single rooms. On the top 13th floor, only one suite room, a spa and the bar on the mountain side. On the 12th floor, they have two larger twin rooms but they never open for platinum upgrade.
Even I stayed on the higher 12th floor, noisy Chinese group stayed at the same floor and annoyed their loud noise until midnight.
At first, they jsut prepared for me one towel set and one bottled water and one mug cup. This is absolutely not intentional standard way but Japanese local hotel way. Internationally we borrow a room not by a person and especially a guest with a elite status has got a privilege to stay with additional person. Therefore all amenities must be prepared at least two. I explained this direct to a staff.
At some rooms, even they told me upgraded, there was no coffee maker. And amenities are cheaper ones. We guest should check them and ask staff if some amenities in lack.
The bar on the 13th floor has good view but the service is quite stingy comparing to other international hotels. Platinum free drink never come with a small snack plate although he already prepared on the other table where no body else. The glass was standard and the staff was not very friendly. He seemed just robot-ism working and I just had a glass then went out. Not welcome atmosphere and never felt something special comparing to other bars at SPG properties.
Overall, one good thing among plenty of worse things at this hotel was that staff listened to my claims at least and prepare as I wanted except for room upgrade. Such as coffee maker and extra towel sets.
So we guest should insist them if we feel something wrong. Otherwise the staff never do better things for us without our insisting. This is why I never felf that there was a hospitality mind on the staff.
Too busy by treating Chinese big groups everyday to treat elite guests???
To GM again, please learn how to treat elite members and know common SPG rules. You should stay by your own money to experience at any Four Points hotels or any other SPG properties overseas how the staff treat guests and think about what is the...
Read moreWe stayed here on a recommendation from a friend but were slightly disappointed overall.
Firstly the location is superb. Particularly if arriving by airport bus, or train, the hotel is within metres of both the train and bus station (it's actually the closest hotel to both). In this regard it's extremely convenient.
The staff are reasonable, but they are certainly below the Japanese norm when it comes to proactive service with a smile. For example when discussing bus and tram passes (and in Japanese, which means they could have been even more helpful), they didn't bother to show all options; which we were to later find out would have saved us quite a bit of money.
On this, it's worth getting a 2 or 3 day pass and the bus from the hotel to Mt Hakodate (which is the number 1 site to see), is nearly the same price as a single day bus, and more than if we'd bought a 2 day pass.
The hotel rooms are tiny and not as cheap as they should be. The facilities are old and tired.
The room we stayed in the first night was so small in fact that were had no choice by to pay 4000 Yen in addition to upgrade to a slightly larger room, which in comparison to our stay in Sapporo was a lesser room for nearly double the price. Next time I stay in Hakodate, I'll be looking for a hotel near the same location (convenient), but with larger more affordable rooms.
Another convenient attribute to this hotel is the fact that in the lobby there is a souvenir (omiyage) store, which for the Japanese always means a selection of local goods to give as gifts to share the experience of where you have come from (Omiyage is compulsory for Japanese travelling, so you'll find them at railways stations - I've never see one attached to a hotel as blatantly as in Loisir).
Bottom line..... location, location, location. But this hotel needs a lot of work.
Room Tip: Southside looks at Mt Hakodate, but you can see the same view from elevator area. Northside looks over...
Read moreUpdate: Stayed in the top floor and it was a amazing view of the bay and the JR station. Very sad to stay that in June 2023 the hotel will no longer be a Four Points, and will be under a new brand. That will be sad news for any Marriott loyalty brands. Still one of my favorite hotels because of the location and the amazing breakfast.
Enjoyed my stay here overall. The location is centrally located next to the JR Station which is great for most travelers making their way via the JR train. For those visiting Hakodate for the first time, the hotel is located next to the famous Morning Market where lots of fresh fish is at and where you can get the freshest seafood. And if it's in season the melon is so fresh and ripe and amazingly sweet. One of the best melons you'll ever try!
There are plenty of room options from budget small rooms to much larger rooms. We got the smaller room since it was a busy time for visitors in the area. It has most amenities that you would need from slippers for the room to toothbrush and razors for your stay.
If you're a Platinum Marriott member you can opt for the free breakfast buffet, which is an amazing value for the options available. They have everything for most people ranging from a western appetite to the local dishes of the area. They even have fresh sushi from the local fish and squid and surprisingly they even bake their own croissants and goodness is it tasty! They also can make fresh ramen for you as well.
The staff were extremely accomdating and very helpful!
I would stay here again for the location to local transport and the friendly service as well as the great buffet spread (even though I'm a fan of trying things in the local area vs just eating in the...
