I do not take my reviews lightly. Kindness knows no boundaries. Aki, was and is, a truly kind person. More importantly, a true example of a servant leader. While his desserts, teas, and wares were already amazing, his heart and his kindness are the truest testament and greatest gift. We met him saying farewell to a tour that had stayed with him in the shop laughing and spending time together for countless hours. His care for people, families, and children is genuine. Without our awareness, he brought us surprise tea made with mountain water, handmade chocolates made with the most expensive sugar in Japan, and again surprised us with his very own handmade ice cream. Having traveled the world, we’ve sampled many things. Authentic quality can be imitated, but it cannot be faked. We were blown away not only by his generosity, but the effort and personal labor that we know from our own experience goes into creating such items. We spent much time together conversing both in English and in Japanese, and got to know Aki very well over the course of our visit. He then surprised us further with copies of his own hand painted watercolor artwork. Being artists ourselves, we were shocked by such a gift. After an enjoyable visit, he even discounted his own wares as a thank you to us for such the lovely time together. And… Aki is a hugger. He loves hugs because they spread joy and happiness to one another. We parted ways and again, I had to thank him not for his amazing desserts or superb matcha, but his authentic kindness and genuine heart. He waved goodbye and waited for us to walk onto the bus before returning to his shop to make sure we got there safely. And he did all of this on the day he was closed. He was not open this day, but he was still open. And had spent the day open. Especially when he had no reason to be. Aki is a true testament to servant leadership and the best way we could had never planned to have ended our trip to Hakone. We walked in on a whim for some matcha to celebrate the end of our trip to Hakone, and we left with meeting a wonderful example of authentic kindness to aspire to live up to. We could not have asked for more. Or for having made a wonderful new friend. When next we return, we will be going back to see Aki. I will remember his kindness for the future and aspire to emulate his example.

I wasn’t feeling the best here tbh but had the most life altering experience ever today so want to mémorialize this. I asked the shop owner (Aki-san) if he sells any matcha (stupid tourists causing a shortage) and he said sorry he doesn’t and he ran out otherwise he would have gifted me. He later found a can and gave it to me for free before I left alongside many other sweets and some printings of his paintings 😭 it was such a special experience and he refused to accept any cash but I couldn’t let it go so I made it a point to bring back fancy Japanese fruits before his shop closed. He was so confused and kept saying sorry probably as it’s the only English word he knows and I just started crying because God knows such kindness deserves no place in a wretched world like this. Thank you for making the day of a complete stranger, I hope you will never be taken advantage of by anyone that comes your way ❤️ Needless to say, the matcha and sweets are 100/10 and they are ridiculously cheap for the quality, however that’s just a bonus. You come here to encounter kindness that has no place in this world.

An absolute pleasure of a visit! If you are looking to try wagashi that is delicious and made with care, this is the place. The shop is small but overwhelmingly welcoming. I went and ordered a tea set tasting. The owner prepared the dishes for roughly 30 minutes, while I sat enjoying some complimentary green tea and chocolate. The wagashi came out beautifully plated and the owner, Aki, explained each flavor. He was very friendly and provided refills of tea and chatted using google translate. He also gave some free little art print sheets and a little origami as a gift. It was beautiful and warmed my heart. Very sweet and accommodating. As for the wagashi, it was delicious! You get to try so many flavors! And it was so affordable too. Honestly the best tea service and desserts. If you’re looking for an authentic and great experience and wish to support a family business that has been around for over 100 years, you must come!

We had a truly wonderful experience with our host Aki-san at the cute, family owned confectionary shop Magosan Souhonke nearby Gora. We have never encountered a more wonderful, friendly and generous host and are thankful to have met such a genuine, good person. After a day of traveling along Lake Ashi, the cable cars didn't go back to Gora so we took the bus and got off at the Miyaginobashi bus stop. We came across Aki-san's shop on our way up to Gora, just a few minutes walk. The mochi and other Japanese sweets we bought are made with the highest quality ingredients and are super delicious. The welcoming with tea and sweets tasting Aki-san gave us was fantastic and it was great to have a nice conversation, with both of us using a translation app to convey our messages to each other. As Aki-san said, "The most important thing is the people we meet". 10/10 would recommend if you're in the area!

The warmth, kindness and generosity of the owner cannot be overstated. He was so kind to give us so many samples to try before we purchased something. He used a translator so we could communicate and he expressed how grateful he was to meet us. He also gave us some prints of his artwork. On top of all this, the sweets were absolutely amazing. He's been making sweets by hand for over 40 years, and you can tell. Everything we tried was delicious and he explained what ingredients were in each thing. You can see how proud he was of everything he made. Everything was very reasonably priced too, if not underpriced for the quality and care in the products. The shop is a 10 minute walk from the cable car down a steep hill, but I highly highly recommend a visit to this beautiful shop. Everything but one item (dorayaki) was vegan.

My parents and I got lost going to Gora station from the bus station, and randomly stumbled upon this beautiful little store for coffee. The owners welcomed us and kindly explained to us what the sweets were. When we got up to pay, I asked the owner if he can direct us to our hotel next to Gora station and he told us that the walk is very rough, especially in the rain, so he offered to drop us off for free. As we were driving up, we were shocked how windy the roads were, and not safe for pedestrians… we were absolutely in awe of their generosity. We didn’t know how to really thank them because we don’t speak Japanese, so my dad decided to paint something to show his appreciation. Thanks again for the delicious dessert and coffee and giving us a special memory of our Hakone trip we will remember!
