Toriten Ichiya — Restaurant in Hakone

We were made very welcome. The lady who met us spoke enough English to be understood. The English menu was very helpful and we both went for the chicken tempura set meal with spicy spring onions. Absolutely marvellous! Really tasty, and filling as well. Washed down with a Sapporo black label beer. The place filled up really quickly. A very cute and cozy restaurant that specialises in Tempura. I have had tempura from many places before but this was my all time favorite. The chicken was cooked perfectly - it was tender, delicious and juicy and the tempura batter was light and had a great flavour. The tartare sauce served as a condiment was just great! I can't rate the meal highly enough. The set comes with pickled vegetables and miso soup. Staff were very friendly and welcoming and the restaurant is welcoming of foreigners.

Saw the other reviews and decided to pop by while I was in Hakone. Then english menu as mentioned was a godsend but the food was really good. My family and I are vegetarians so we had their vegetable tempura don which was really flavourful. I appreciated that it came with soup especially on a cold day.
