The building itself (at least the part you’re allowed to enter) isn’t particularly spectacular - it’s cold and drafty. But it’s worth visiting because of the gorgeous views from the balcony. You can see Lake Ashi from the balcony and if it’s clear enough, you can also see Fuji-San. On the day we were there Fuji-San was shy and hiding behind the clouds but as you can see from the photos, it’s still a spectacular view. Note - there are two flights of steps up to the balcony and I didn’t see a ramp or elevator for those who are differently abled.
Photo of the reconstructed Hakone Detached Palace (Kyu Hakone Rikyu), which used to be part of a larger summer retreat complex for the imperial family called the Hakone Palace (1886 to 1945). After the war, the palace grounds were converted into a public park and the detached palace was converted into a museum. On a clear day, the 2nd floor balcony offers a breathtaking view of Mt. Fuji with Ashinoko Lake in the foreground.
Lovely park. Huge, beautiful, and has a viewing tower with splendid views to Lake Ashi and Fuji-san (if one is lucky, without clouds right on top...). There are various areas to visit within the park, including the lakeside observation building which is a beautiful piece of architecture. Hakone checkpoint, tea houses, hakone Jinja, lake ashi etc. within walking distance.
