Wakasugi — Restaurant in Joetsu

We somehow found ourselves at this family run tempura restaurant in the Takada area of Jōetsu City, enjoying their tempura set and sashimi with a pitcher of their in-house sake. The fresh seafood of the day and seasonal produce are displayed in front of the diners at the counter, whereupon the owner-chef expertly prepares the tempura. It's certainly a life-affirming experience in our current age of convenient but anonymous online food deliveries. We ordered the ippai course which comes with tempura, sashimi, a small dish (ours was seasonal round eggplant which was delicious), edamame and two beers each. As a whole, I was very satisfied and had a lovely evening. I would have enjoyed the food even more if the tempura was slightly better. The tempura was not bad; just fine but I think it could be better. The sashimi and other dishes were excellent. My favourite tempura was the scallop.
