Visited for dinner on a weekday night. I'm not sure if it's a family run restaurant but felt a little like it. Atmosphere and service was warm (we're tourists), everyone else in the restaurant was local. Wasn't crowded which was nice.
Ordered the eel set (first tier, the less expensive of the two, think it was between 3300 to 3800 yen) and thoroughly enjoyed it, eel was cooked perfectly - buttery soft and caramelised skin side with rice in sticky sweet sauce. Hubby ordered one of the sets (ends with Zen, about 4800 yen?) that includes jibuni. The jibuni was enjoyable albeit underwhelming (I'm no expert but the soup sauce tasted a little like sukiyaki tho less sweet). Everything in the set was very good, comforting and enjoyable but not mindblowing. Also ordered fried oysters - came with a slightly spicy dip sauce (never thought I'd have anything actually spicy in Japan) and yummy mayo.
Overall lovely experience that I'd recommend if you're in the naga machi district and...
Read moreWe walked in and a fantastic dinner here in December 2024! My husband and I have been traveling in Japan for 2 weeks across 7 cities and while we've had delicious meals everywhere we go, we honestly felt this dinner at Gyohan was the best in terms of extremely high quality for value meal! We each got a set meal for ~4500 yen each which included sashimi, jibuni, fish, various vege and fish side dishes, and melon icecream for dessert. Not shown in the photo of my set meal, but crab (in season for winter) was also included! We felt this high quality meal could easily be USD 150 back in NYC. Loved the cosy and homely vibe with just a few tables and counter seats, chef preparing food in front of you at the counter, seems family run and all were super kind and friendly. There is an English menu. Note the Google map lists this as a crab house, and while they do serve crab, they serve a lot of other seafood and other food too. Please come support this...
Read moreAbsolutely delicious food very reasonably priced. Looks like it’s family run by people who try very hard to please. It’s in a great location and overlooks a street full of restaurants below. We went twice on our visit to Kanazawa, the first I stayed with familiar stuff ( sashimi and tempura) and the second I ventured out my comfort zone. The familiar food was the best I’ve ever had, the unfamiliar on the second night - some of it may be an acquired taste but I was glad I tried. I think the restaurant offers great value and has a pleasant if unspectacular interior. If you’re looking for Japanese seafood with a lot of delicious side dishes with a set menu this would be a great place to venture. Just don’t expect a lot of English to be spoken,...
