Ameya — Restaurant in Kumamoto

My husband and I visited ameya because it was well rated and we wanted to eat somewhere tourists don't go to, and experience life a bit more like a local.

And we had a fantastic time here! The atmosphere is authentic and nostalgic (even though neither of us would have known the Shōwa era). The staff took great care of us and we felt very welcome despite the very obvious fact that we were tourists. I speak a little bit of Japanese, and got the opportunity to talk to other patrons. We tried different, all tasty nihonshū and many delicious homemade dishes. I highly recommend the fluffy tamagoyaki!

It was such a great experience, this place clearly felt cherished by both the owners and the locals. I felt grateful to have had the opportunity to dine at ameya.

Based on others' reviews, we came to this restaurant ... what a pleasant surprise. The owner, his wife and his mom could not be more helpful, despite our total lack of Japanese! They have mainly cold cooked dishes and we got to choose from 20+ varieties - all laid out in front of the counter. While there were a lot of vegetables, we also tried the warm fish croquettes, chicken livers and the boiled mackerel. Towards the end of our dinner, the owner introduced us to his family and we started showing our family and travel pictures with everybody in the restaurant. 肥後銀行本店の裏。

創業から７０年ほど？になる居酒屋さん。 もとは名前の通り、飴を販売されていたんだけども、って話だ。

ひとさまの情報によれば、

「あめや」界隈ここは明治時代の陸軍歩兵第13連隊『山崎練兵場』の名残の地名で、同じく山崎町も今に名を残している。

当時熊本市は市区を南北に分離した状態でこの『山崎練兵場』があったらしい。これが市街の発展を妨げていた。それを移転、跡地に市街地建設する市区改正事業に尽力した人物が居る。

市長の辛島格というお方。その功績は大きかったらしく、その名前は近くの『辛島町』や『辛島公園』などにもちゃんと残されている。

この界隈は昔は今より賑わっていて歌舞伎座もあったようだ。近くのRKK熊本放送局敷地内には、森鴎外の歴史小説『阿部一族』でお馴染みの『阿部一族屋敷跡』の碑がある。

屋号の由来そんな場所にお店を構えるのが今回の『あめや』だ。元々『飴屋』さんだったことから付けられたものなんだとお店の方がおっしゃっていた。

だ、そうな。よく調べて書かれておるなあ。 昭和27年すなわち1952年ってことか。なら創業から68年となるか（2020年）。

京都のような「おばんざい」形式のおみせ。 大皿が２０皿くらい並んでおりましたな。

世が世なので皿はラップで覆われており、従来の壮観は拝めなかったが。なもんで、開けて中身みるわけにもいかんし、一皿ずつ説明してくださった。

肉じゃがやなますにも強い関心はあったが、イモ枠はポテサラに振った。まっさきに鯖の煮付である。コノシロ（こはだ）の南蛮もぜひ。

どの料理も良いものばかり。ちゃんと塩気はあるんだが、優しい味わい。これは遠い昔にどこかで・・・なるほど、男の隠れ家、そういうことであるかと。

思わず、こういうお料理に飢えておったのかも知れんと呟く。

で、つれがインスタで見て絶対食べたいと言っていた鰯のフライを頂く。これがまた素晴らしい。身が柔らかく衣はカラリとし、備え付けの醤油との相性に唸る。

そういやお通しは豆腐でした。温かい。生姜と葱がいいかんじ。 んで、しばらくして心太（ところてん）がお通し第二弾でしたな。

飲み物。ぶたはノンアルだったのだけど。つれがビールを。 瓶ビールは（メジャー銘柄は）何でもあるかんじ。今回はキリンのクラシックラガーを。

大女将とでも呼べば良いのか、先代の奥方様であるが。 世間話や昔の話などを聞かせて下さったわけですよ。
