I would never expected horse meat to be so tender, with the right lean-to-fat ratio. Out of all the dishes I had at Mutsugorō, Basashi was definitely my absolute favorite as it has such clean umami flavor. Other great dishes include:

Bank Kushiyaki (horse meat yakitori) Hitokuchi Katsu (horse meat croquettes) Horse filet steak with fried garlic Karashi Renkon (lotus root with Japanese Mustard)

The restaurant is located in the basement; people were smoking on the staircase as we were walking down. The long corridor outside of the restaurant was pack with people waiting for a table.

Inside of the restaurant, it was very lively, with a lot of smokes from their open kitchen as chefs were preparing yakitori and other grilled dishes. Staffs were friendly and they've prepared menus in English, Korean and Chinese. However not the full version, is better to use...

Waited for a seat for about 20min (which I believe is on the good side) Sat down and began to order. They had run out of the horse meat steak and the fried hamburger we were there for...after we had eaten one bite of the table fee appetizer. In the end, had to pay 880yen for leaving the restaurant with only a bite of food.

Japanese service should be more attentive and caring:

  1. prewarning customers before seating that the their most famous foods are sold out

  2. understanding that they are in the wrong for running out of their signature dish 2hours before closing and...

A famous horse meat restaurant in Kumamoto. Not easy to find as it locates at B1, the sign was not obvious. There is already queue even before the shop opens, there is a waiting list outside, just need to fill in the name and wait. Not a very big restaurant and the turn over rate not very fast, recommend to go early. First time trying horse meat, it’s definitely above my expectation. The shop has English menu, but has no full list of food items. It’s better to use google translate to get the...

Great place to try the horse meat sashimi. I had it a few times, this is the best. They also offer other items like the horse tartar with natto (which I think is my second fav item) and cooked horse meat. But one thing I do like it here is the atmosphere, and being seated at the bar counter to watch the kitchen in action .the chefs are super friendly. There's bound to have queue for such a popular local place. So if you are not there early, go and put your name down. And come back later.
