A small 7-8 seater home-style restaurant that has absolutely fresh and delicious food that warms the body.
Had the miso-grilled fish and eel dishes, with sashimi and some assorted tempura. Sashimi was fresh and the shrimp in particular was so creamy, one of the best I have ever had. Tempura was lightly fried, with just the sufficient amount of batter, and not oily at all.
Eel and fish was amazing, as was the rice. Perfectly cooked. The meal also came with some local side dishes (Kyoto radish, fish roe, and konnyaku) which was unsurprisingly delicious as well.
Happy that we chanced upon this shop! It is located at the basement of the building, quite a well hidden spot. Look for the lighted lantern sign with the character “新”
Food is made to order, so it does take some time. I believe we waited for around 25-30 minutes. A very reasonable wait given the care and attention given to the preparation of each diner's dish.
Thank you for the great food and welcoming us into your...
Read moreMy wife and I stopped by here for a small dinner after walking through the B1 floor in the building. To be honest we were actually planning on going to the duck rice place but the line was crazy long. We looked around and saw this place with an interesting menu and some good reviews. So we decided to try it and we were glad we did.
The atmosphere definitely feels like one of those family run small restaurants (what I’d call in the US a “hole in the wall”). Both the chef/host and hostess were super friendly and the food was amazing. Simple, not overly seasoned and tasty. We got the egg/beef set with tempura. It’s amazing to watch the chef do everything from scratch and the tempura was amazing! The owners saw us off as well which felt very traditional and never experienced before, felt very non-tourist area like.
We will see you next time we...
Read moreNice small traditional Japanese restaurant underground near Yasaka Shrine. I had a yu-doufu set (tofu set). Rest of my group had Saikyo-yaki (grilled fish), gyu-toji (beef cooked in egg), and eel set.
The restaurant prides itself in the selection of ingredients. For the appetizer, we were served the fresh bamboo shoots and konyaku.
As for my main, the tofu was smooth, the rice was really fluffy beyond my imagination.
The only thing to note is that the restaurant does take a while to serve its dinner. We went there at 7:30pm or so and was served 8:15pm, as there is only one chef and one wait staff. Bear this in mind if you have other plans...
