‼️MUST READ (If You Don’t Want to Feel SCAMMED)‼️
Tried the same wine (same vintage) before — the bottle costs around $65–$75 in consumer price, yet they charged $30 per glass. When I asked why, staff said:
“Yes, we’re pricey, but it’s our anniversary week, plus service and tax.”
Other bars also charge service and tax, yet their prices are half or even less for the same pour. 🤷♀️ Even if it’s their anniversary, I wouldn’t be this dumbfounded if the bottle they charged that price for was at least somewhat reasonable.
What’s worse, they never mention the price beforehand — only told me after I had already drunk half the glass, when I asked them myself. If you’re going to charge that much, at least inform customers before pouring, right?
‼️Also, they have separate menus for locals and foreigners, with higher prices for foreigners (confirmed in other reviews). It wouldn’t be surprising if the same thing applies to wine, too.
In short: Quiet atmosphere but way overpriced and foreigners beware. And as many other reviewers said — Kyoto has plenty of great, HONEST wine bars where you can enjoy good wine without...
Read moreWe stumbled upon this wine bar which was close to our hotel. While we found the atmosphere to be very inviting and cozy, we didn’t expect what was to come. This gem quickly became one of our favorite unexpected finds during our Japan adventure. There is no wine list! You simply tell the welcoming host what you like and she will bring some selections for you to choose from. Each recommendation was exceptional and came from small vineyards that sadly may not be able to find again. The food was equally as amazing. The owner and chef clearly knows what he is doing! We tried a few of the small plates and were not disappointed with anything!! Best bites and they paired perfectly with the wine. Be prepared to dine - it isn’t speedy but they are very upfront about the time it will take. We went back twice on our visit and look forward to returning next time we are in town. Go...
Read moreThe service wasn’t bad. However, unless you ask about the price of a glass of wine, you won’t know it — and they tend to overcharge for it. I asked for a recommendation for an orange wine, but they only suggested wines I already knew, so I chose one of them. Since I knew the price of that wine, I was surprised to see how much they charged for a glass.
I understand that the prices on the foreign and local menus can differ, but I didn’t expect the glass wine prices to be this high.
That said, the wine selection itself is excellent. Still, there are many wine bars in Kyoto that offer great selections at more reasonable prices. If money is no object, I’d recommend a visit.
I don’t usually write reviews, but I felt I had to this time — because overcharging foreign tourists is...
