Hisago — Restaurant in Kyoto

We had lunch at this popular shokudo place and ordered their oyako-don and kinugasa-don teishoku sets. Both choices are excellent and we saw many customers order same menu items. The total cost was ¥ 2,060, which is very good value for your money, especially in the Gion / Higashiyama area. We enjoy both dishes as warm, comfort food in that cold day of Kyoto (March 2025).

Customer services from staff members are good as usual and you can make payment with V/MC payment cards. The place has reasonable open space, maybe around 10 tables but it was quickly full with customers due to popularity. Been here three times and Hisago continues to be the best oyakodonburi in Kyoto. Surprisingly flavorful egg and chicken that is well worth the wait, which around noon typically averages close to an hour each visit. Very reasonably priced as well at around ¥1000 and honestly is quite filling, we got the extra large rice bowl for ¥150 extra and it was a struggle to finish everything even though we were starving after all the walking from Kiyomizudera temple. We found this recommend in some Japan out of the beaten track guides so we check for some pics and it looked really authentic and we ended going there to try it out. The place looks like a normal house from outside so it is easy to miss... When you enter the staff is very nice and directly show you to a table, bringing some english menus. They don't speak much english but they can understand the basic. Most of the menu choices are variations of their rice or noodle soup dishes. we've ordered some udon noodles and some oyako don (rice dish topped with chicken, soft egg and green onion).
