どこから話せばいいのだろうか――。

まず最初に、このレビューがシェフの目に届くことを心から願っている。

私はこの近所に住んでいて、この店がオープンすると聞いたときは心が躍った。 アメリカで生まれ育ち、日本に住んで十五年。時々どうしてもピザが恋しくなる。 しかもニューヨークスタイルのピザこそ、私にとっての「本物」なのだ。

この店には、期待を抱かずにはいられない要素がいくつもあった。 雰囲気は最高。バーカウンターもある。スタッフはとても感じがいい。値段も良心的。 こんな場所でピザをつまみながらのんびりできたら――まさにオアシスだ。

……そう、ピザを食べるまでは。

どう言えばいいのだろうか。 味が、まるで存在しないのだ。 「まずい」わけではない。ただ、何もない。紙を食べているようで、いや、それよりも味がない。 いったい何が起きているのだろう？

この店に本当に良くなってほしいという思いから、私はこの五年間、 「もしかして改善されたかも」と願いながら、年に一度は挑戦し続けてきた。 だが、残念ながら、いつも結果は同じだった。

先日、埼玉から友人が遊びに来てくれたときのこと。 通りかかったこの店を見て、私は彼にこの長年の苦悩を語った。 「もしかして、俺の味覚がおかしいのかな？ せめて“そこそこ”のピザでもいいのに」と。

友人は翌日ランチで試してみると言い、偏見なしで感想を伝えると約束してくれた。 そして彼も、私とまったく同じ感想を抱いたという。 その言葉を聞いた瞬間、胸のつかえが少しだけ下りた気がした。

――ピザ・モンスターへ。 あなたたちのコンセプトは素敵だ。きっといい人たちなんだと思う。 失礼を承知で言わせてもらうが、どうかレシピを見直してほしい。 もし味見係が必要なら、喜んで志願する。

そして、長文になってしまってごめんなさい。 また来年、もう一度、試しに行きます。

Where to even begin…

First of all I truly hope the chef reads this review.

I live in the area and I was stoked when I heard this place was opening up.

I was born and raised in the U.S. and having lived in Japan for 15 years I often crave pizza and New York style is my favorite.

This place has so much potential: The vibe is great. There is a bar. The staff is vey kind. Prices are reasonable.

Having a pizza place with all the above where I could chill and enjoy a slice would be like an oasis.

But then I ate the pizza…

How can I put this…

It is completely void of any flavor. It’s not even bad it’s just…nothing. Like eating paper but with less taste. What is going on here?!

Considering how much I want this place to be good, for the past 5 years I would make a point to try it again once every year or so in hopes that the chef has realized something has gone horrible wrong and they have since reevaluated their cooking method.

But alas it never changes.

This past week my friend from Saitama was visiting and we walked past it when I mentioned the story of my longing for it to be good.

“Maybe I am crazy? It shouldn’t be difficult to make even a mediocre pizza right? If it was at least mediocre I would still be happy”

He made a point to try it for lunch the other day and promised to stay unbiased and report is review to me.

And he confirmed pretty much everything I thought. In a sense it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders as it has been troubling me for some time.

And so, Dear Pizza Monstar,

I love the concept. You seem like cool people. I don’t mean to be rude but, could you please fix the recipe. If you need a taste tester I will be happy to volunteer.

As I’ve mentioned to your staff in person multiple times before… you gotta update your google hours when they differ! Can’t bike all the way up here dreaming of a great slice of pizza just to find some marker’s note on a scrap of paper saying you’ll open 45 mins’ later than broadcasted! On the positive side the pizza is great! It’d be nicer tho if you cared enough about your customers as to update your google hours when...

Amazing amazing amazing pizza. Best New York style pizza I've ever had in Japan AND the US. Unbelievably good. The crust is just right. The home made marinara sauce is just the right mix of spicy and savory. I can't believe the owner has never been to New York! For whatever reason, he got it right!
