3.5/5 Food was good but not outstanding. The dessert and goma tofu were my favourite. The rest are good too.
I agree with another comment about their timing of the food. If they paced the hot foods better it would've been a more pleasant experience. The servers were rushing in and out despite the place not being super busy. The meal felt a bit rushed as a result, because it felt like they want the customer to leave as soon as food is finished. Regardless, I took my time to eat and finished everything.
The garden is nice and the view from our table was nice too. However, while walking in the garden before our meal, I did notice this sign in the garden which apparently meant women are not allowed to enter. I believe it reads this is a boundary of women, cows/ox and horses? I looked it up and there's a Wikipedia page on japan's history of "women's prohibition ("nyonin kinsei"), which is apparently related to this sign.
Since i live in a somewhat progressive city in North America, I'm not going to lie, I did find this sign to be irritating. I'm not sure if they just wanted to showcase "tradition" or didn't think foreigners would take notice because it's written in kanji. Japan and kyoto has a rich culture, it would've been nice if something else is showcased instead of this.
Overall it was an interesting experience. Staff were friendly and spoke...
Read more4.5 This was such a nice experience. It was about a 10-15 minute walk from the station with lots of cute places to stop along the way. Don't be tempted to stop for snacks though if you want to eat yummy tofu. There is only one set they offer with many types of tofu. They also have vegetable tempura, pickles, a poached (onsen) egg, and rice. All of the tofu was so fresh, clean and tasty. I especially liked the tofu with the gingko nut inside, and the sesame tofu. We ended with a tofu topped with a bit of raspberry sauce that was so sure and perfect I might dream about it. So save room! When we asked for a table with chairs they suggested we sit around the Japanese garden, but there are only tatami mats on that side. It was beautiful and worth it. We went to a room with 4 tables that could fit 16 people. It did get noisy at the table next to us after they were done eating, but lingered for a while. (It's not necessarily their fault but I did find the table next to us very distracting and noisy, especially after they finished eating which is why they lost a star.) The price was 3,800 yen per person. It is worth the price to me due to the quality and quantity of food (types to try...
Read moreWe had lunch at this famous place close to Tenryu-ji Temple and were very lucky to enter with no waiting. The manager asked whether we're OK to have the 'tofu lunch set' as the only option and we said yes since we knew beforehand the specialty of the restaurant. The set costs us ¥ 4,800 / person since we upgraded the rice bowl to the special yuba rice soup bowl ; otherwise the tofu set costs only ¥ 4,400 / person. We recommend the upgrade since the yuba rice was really nice with good texture, natural & subtle soy sweetness and aroma.
The hero of the lunch set were many different soy products like yuba and tofu in variety of food preparation methods (soup, fried, dessert, etc). We like the tofu in soup, fried and the sesame tofu 👍. As part of the set, we also got soy-based pudding as dessert and vegetarian tempura items.
The restaurant is quite big and secluded, so good to have relax meal while enjoying the view of the zen garden outside. Customer services from staff members are excellent and they will try to accommodate your requests. Payment with V/MC cards are allowed in this restaurant, so no need to worry on 💴💴 cash amount in...
