After a long day at the Castle and viewing the spotted pumpkin, we searched on Google for "restaurants near us" and it found Tomikinton at the nearby Aeon mall. Pictures of the food got me excited so my family and I marched to the mall and we were not disappointed!
The menu and plastic examples of food in front Tomikinton are impressive. I don't think you can go wrong with any dish. As you can see from my photos, we ordered:
Assorted cutlet set "Yokubari": cutlet, mille-feuille cutlet w/cheese and a big ol' fried shrimp. Comes with tartar sauce. Pork mille-feuille cutlet w/ cheese set Box of rice topped w/ pork cutlet Highball Coke (not pictured)
All of these came with miso soup, pickles, spicy mustard a slice of lemon and a generous amount of cabbage. The presentation is great and they even look like the pictures in the menu :-) My dish, the Yokubari, was delicious: the cutlets weren't greasy and the panko-coating was light and crunchy. The rest of my family reported only excellent opinions about their orders. The miso soup was great too: it was savory with pieces of pork, seaweed and konjac. Your mountain of cabbage will be greatly improved by the dressing already supplied at your table - make sure to shake it first! (I believe it's a sesame-based sauce). With that dressing, you will surely finish that intimidating amount of cabbage! Daikon pickles make for a tasty addition.
Your table also is thoughtfully supplied with: a small box of salt, a pot of sweet sauce and a pot of spicy sauce for your katsu (the spicy one is delicious) and a large carafe of cold mugicha (barley tea).
We came on a Thursday evening and it was not busy at all. The environment gives an old-fashioned restaurant feel with an pig theme. Tasteful pig paintings decorate the walls and a line of pig statues separate you and the cooks. The service was kind and patient enough with my grade-school level Japanese. Menus are in Japanese and English.
Tomikinton is definitely worth visiting for a hearty meal and good atmosphere. Bring your family...
Read moreI was queuing for the restaurant and the staff attitude was so bad. First, i was sitting in front of the restaurant and he asked me to get off and i dont know why? Secondly, when i was looking at the menu, he asked me to moved again and walk right in front of my face when he can walk behind. Lastly, when i wanna talk to him about what he have done, he said this restaurant doesnt speak english. It obviously seems like he doesnt welcome any foreigner. And I want to know what kind of restaurant you are and what kind of attitude are you giving to the customer. Your service is surprisingly poor....
Read moreThere is a great variety of restaurants in the southern part of the Aeon mall so the decision was tough. Thankfully I chose this amazing place. The service was great and they were very helpful. Every menu item is also written in English, you know how hard ordering food in Japan can be without it. The pork belly cheese cutlet was just delicious. If I ever come back to Matsumoto I will pay them...
