This little place boasts not only some of the best and freshest sushi in Nagasaki, it also hosts some of the most wonderful stories and hospitality we have ever experienced in Japan. The chef shared that he was only 1 when the atomic bomb hit the city, and he and his family lived just 4 kilometers from the hypocenter. But his jolly, positive attitude surely must be a testament to the spirit of this wonderful city, and it was an absolute joy to dine at Taichi. We brought our two kids as well, and even though they didn’t have any sushi, he kindly helped to pop edamame and slice up their store-bought dinners into smaller pieces for them, and even treated them to smaller servings of tamago and maguro nigiri sushi. We enjoyed the sushi so much that we had far more servings than the ¥3,000 set. Highly recommend the Nagasaki otoro, maguro, uni and horse mackerel. This was truly one of the best dining experiences we have ever had and we will be back!

We came here after looking for a good sushi place in the area. The sushi itself was just okay but the atmosphere was very uncomfortable. The sushi chef gave us a menu with no prices and just expected us to order. At the end of the meal he randomly punched in some numbers on the calculator to show us the total. He also tried to say we got 7 pieces instead of 5 per person and we had to correct him. We felt like we overpaid but that wasn’t even the worst part. He definitely made fun of us with the locals at the counter. Lots of pointing and laughing in our direction. Sure I’m not fluent in Japanese but I can pick up some words here and there and he definitely said something along the lines of American “gomi” (trash). Basically don’t come here unless you’re Japanese or you’re desperate for nearby sushi at the expense of being made fun of.

Although the fish was fresh and the sushi tasted really good, the atmosphere my partner and I experienced was somewhat uncomfortable. We made a reservation as we’ve read all the positive reviews, but after arriving we felt the chef and locals were making fun of us, continuously laughing out loud, not involving us but reacting on our behavior. We were totally surprised by a bill of 15.600 yen as the menu did not mention prices and the majority of the reviewing guests didn’t spend more than 8.000 yen.
