万代そば （新潟県新潟市中央区／最寄駅：新潟） ●普通カレーライス 550円 新潟駅北口(万代口)から徒歩10分、新潟市の中心街にある「万代シテイバスセンター」の1階にある立ち食いそばコーナー「万代そば」。 新潟市民のソウルフードといっても過言ではない「バスセンターのカレー」として有名なお店。バスターミナルのビルが完成した1973年(昭和48年)から続いている老舗の立ち喰いそば屋。 新潟市の中心街で「早い、安い、うまい」の三拍子揃ったお店として地元民に親しまれ、仕事の昼休みのランチや、家族で街に買い物に来たときに食べたという思い出、帰省のためにバスセンターに立ち寄るたびに食べていた話など、新潟県民にとっては懐かしいエピソードとともに記憶に残る一品なのだそう。 2017年放送の「アメトーーク!」の「カレー大好き芸人」や、2018年放送の「秘密のケンミンSHOW」など全国ネットのバライティ番組で紹介されたことで、一気に全国規模の知名度が広がり、県内外の観光客も多く訪れるようになった。 今ではそばよりもカレーの方が多く売れるようになり、平日でも多い日は1000食は売れ、週末には1200食以上売れる日も多いそうだ。 以前は昭和の空気感がそのまま残ったようなレトロな雰囲気だったが、2020年に万代シテイバスセンターの耐震工事と合わせてお店も若干リニューアル。背の高いパーテーションが付いたカウンターなどが新設された。 この日は土曜日の10時40分頃に到着。「万代そば」のレジには10人以上の行列が出来ているが、立ち食いコーナーなので提供もスピーディーでどんどん列が進んでいく。カレーライスも食券を渡してからわずか10秒程度で完成。 レジの手前に券売機があり、カレーライスは「ミニ」(430円)、「普通」(550円)、「大盛」(670円)の3つのサイズ展開。 ボリュームが多いのも有名で、「ミニ」でもライスの量が200gと一般的なカレーライス1人前のボリューム。ライスと同量程度のカレールウが乗るので、ミニで全体の重量が約460gになるそうだ。 「普通」はライスとカレールウ全体で約780g、「大盛」になるとなんと全体で約1160gと1キロ超えのデカ盛りサイズとなる。ミニを一般的なカレーライス1人前の基準だとすると、普通が約1.7人前、大盛は約2.5人前という計算になる。 以前より値上がりしたとはいえ、価格とボリュームを考えたらかなりのお得感だ。「安い価格でお腹いっぱいになってほしい」という働く人への労いの気持ちが込められている。 黄色い見た目が特徴的なカレーは、小麦粉、カレー粉、ラード、塩、ザラメなどを配合した自家製のカレールウをベースに、豚のゲンコツ(大腿骨)を野菜と一緒に5時間かけてじっくり煮込んだ濃厚なスープを加えている。 「そば屋のカレー」というとそばつゆ用の魚介出汁を使用した和風な味わいのイメージがあるが、こちらのカレーは動物系オンリーの出汁なのと、カレー粉と小麦粉を中心に作られているため、濃厚な旨味と粘度が高いもったりとした口当たりが特徴。 黄色の見た目であまり辛そうに見えないが、予想以上にしっかりした辛味がある。とろみのある濃厚な豚骨スープを使用しているので、最初はまろやかな味わいだが、後から時間差でスパイスの刺激が口の中に広がる。 具は人参、玉ねぎ、豚肉が入っていて、福神漬けがたっぷり添えてある。学校給食のようなシンプルなカレーライスで、メディアで「昔懐かしいカレーライス」と表現されることが多いが、過去に食べたどのカレーとも似つかないオンリーワンの味わい。 セルフスタイルでカウンターにあるウスターソースやそば用の七味唐辛子をかけて食べるお客さんも多いそうだ。ソースをかけると酸味とコクが混ざり合って一口ごとにグラデーションのある味が生まれる。

We ordered 2 minis and 2 medium with croquettes and added on 2 squid tempura and 2 vegetable tempura and we were unable to finish them. You can skip the tempura as they were pre-fried and were cold and not crispy. We had to eat standing up which was an interesting experience.

This place has been loved by local people for many years, and the curry rice was very famous as their soul food. This was my first experience at the place and I was excited too much, but it was just okay to me. I ordered the curry rice with a larger portion. However, it was too much. I found out the regular size was just enough for most of people, I think. To me feel like the curry was not that special as everybody talk. Little bit overrated, but the price was very low and it would be worth trying if you haven’t tried it yet.

Was our first experience eating curry rice in Japan for the trip and it tasted great. Even my son who does not eat spicy food finished his portion. It is sufficient to get the mini portion. We ordered 2 minis and 2 medium with croquettes and added on 2 squid tempura and 2 vegetable tempura and we were unable to finish them. You can skip the tempura as they were pre-fried and were cold and not crispy. We had to eat standing up which was an interesting experience.
