新潟の街を歩いてきた。いや、駅前のそれもバスセンター近辺を2時間ほどうろちょろとしてきただけなのだが。 それにしても街がデカい、人が多い。無論、地方都市らしい鄙びた部分がなくもないが、それでも長野市あたりとは比較にならないほどのスケールといえる。 用事などない。いつも通りのそぞろ歩きである。駅のロータリーをぐるりと周り、少し歩いてバスセンターを確認。3月で閉店するという新潟ALTAと、昨今話題のNGT劇場を脇目に再度バスセンターへ。高速バスが県内外各地から集積する場所だ。少々古い施設だが、新しいだけのバスタ新宿などよりずっとよい。構内に立ち食いそば店があり、たくさんの方が昼食をとっている。美味そうなカレーの香りが漂ってくる。後で聞いた事だが、こちらのカレーは有名なのだそうだ。そのうち試してみなければならぬ。

昼食をとろう。 家内・娘・息子たちに店を探させる。いろいろ廻っても分からないので近在の店にしよう、ということでバスセンター二階へ上がる。いくつか店がある中で彼らが見つけたのがこの店である。

「マテリアル カフェ」 パンケーキを食べたいという女たちと、メシを欲する息子の妥協点ということだ。明るい店内には若い女の子たちがたくさん集まっている。後で聞いた事だが、若者スポットとして有名な場所であるという。
