We have been working near here for over five years but had never tried this place until now. We went for dinner and almost had to walk out because they had a sign saying reservation only. But the chef came out to talk to us and since there were only two of us, we took us in. That was lucky as I have been wanting to come here for a few months now. We were in for a big surprise! What a gem this place was!
We had a bowl of sushi, kaisendon, (1000yen), and a sushi set (1200yen) , a plate of grilled mackerel to share(600yen?). We were going to order something else if we were still hungry but they gave us another plate of grilled fish (fish with a slice of lemon).
We paid only 2800 yen for dinner for two. We don't drink so we are usually pretty cheap but this was even cheaper than usual.
All of the fish was excellent. Hamachi, which I usually don't like was firm and tasty. Salmon was the best! Kaisendon had a whole bunch of fish including grilled anago sea eel and seared tuna and raw and cooked prawns on top of roasted white sesame seeds and shredded nori.
We don't usually like dashimaki eggs but theirs wasn't overly sweet but very flavorful and we both like it a lot.
We walked in hungry and walked out pretty full.
It's a family-run restaurant with very homey and caring atmosphere. The chef is caring and nice but professional. The server, probably his wife?, is very smiley and kind. Probably their son, who was doing homework at one of the table, took his time to switch the languages on TV for us.
They said they might close early if they run out of fish to serve for the day. Especially, they get fish on Friday for the whole weekend, so when we went there on Sunday night, they were nearing the end of their supply. Btw, their prices are the same for lunch and dinner. All eat-in sets come with a bowl of miso soup. They do take out, but if it's for many people, make sure to order at least one day in advance, two preferred.
We will definitely go back to this place in the near future! It's a great find and we would love to support this local place as much as possible. We will use it for...
Read moreWe are foreigners visiting from USA and our Airbnb recommended this place. I am so glad that they did. The owners were very welcoming and had a great selection of sushi with great prices. They spoke little English but were very patient with us when we tried to speak Japanese. They also recommended us places to visit during our time in Okayama and Japan.
We ordered a nigiri platter with tuna and salmon rolls. Everything was so good especially the Harami! We ended up coming again the very next day to order the Katsudon and the rolls again.
Lots of laughs were shared and this will be one of my favorite memories in Japan. We deeply appreciate their hospitality and look forward to when we...
Read moreWe had the most fantastic evening at Sushi Ichi! This charming little restaurant is run by a lovely family. We really enjoyed meeting them, and the absolutely delicious food. We tried the sushi set and the donburi - both were excellent. It's rare to come across such a good local restaurant with very reasonable prices. Next time we're in Okayama, it will be the first...
