Amijima Chaya — Restaurant in Osaka

Tucked away inside the Fujita Museum, Amijima Chaya is a hidden gem – incredibly quiet, tranquil, and peaceful, with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow beautiful natural light to pour in, creating a calm and soothing atmosphere.

For just ¥500, you can enjoy a choice of matcha, bancha, or sencha, served with two sticks of freshly grilled dango – one topped with soy sauce and the other with red bean paste. The staff recommended the matcha, as it's the most popular, and I'm glad I went with their suggestion.

What made the experience especially memorable was how everything was prepared in front of me. The staff were gently grilling the dango and even cooking the red bean paste on site. They also spoke very good English, which made the interaction even more pleasant.

The first sip of matcha was a surprise – slightly bitter at first, followed by a rich and smooth umami finish. I'm used to sweetened matcha, so it was eye-opening to taste its natural flavour. The dango had a smoky aroma and a chewy texture. I especially enjoyed the red bean version – the paste was smooth and sweet, which paired beautifully with the matcha.

The texture was smooth and frothy, with a creamy finish that lingered pleasantly on the palate. Served in beautiful, handcrafted bowls, the matcha not only satisfied the taste buds but also provided a visually pleasing experience. Complementing the matcha perfectly was the dango – traditional Japanese rice flour dumplings.
