One Pound Steak House — Restaurant in Takayama

We actually didn't plan to visit, but Friday night caught us by surprise with most izakaya fully booked or only have vacancy after 8pm, and we wound up in this restaurant by chance.

This place is a hida beef steakhouse. Their menu is mostly hida beef on sizzling plate. There are other sets like hamburger beef with rice set also, which seems popular with locals as I've seen a few Japanese ordering it instead of the steak. Menu comes in English versions and Japanese versions. Ring the bell on your table when you are ready to order.

We, as non-Japanesr tourist, of course went for the steak on sizzling plate. The beef was deadly. I am happily slayed.

I do think 350g is an overkill. Hida beef is known for it fatty marbly meat - so there is a lot of oil produced by the steak. I think I would have preferred by ordering 150g with rice and salad to help balance my meal. Soup and salad could be added in top of the steak for 200jpy, but I found out too late. My partner, on the other hand, happily devoured his maximum amount of gram of hida beef he had ordered.

The decor is western inspired and very cozy.

In hindsight, I think this visit was a good surprise, as I enjoy not needing to cook my own steak (in comparison to yakiniku which requires one to grill their own meat). I hope more people will find this place...

I was here in Spring 2018. Three years later I am still dreaming of this magical steak. With each bite I had to set down my fork, close my eyes, and chew in disbelief at how amazing it was. It has ruined all other steak for me. What sort of witchcraft is this?! The service was excellent, as well. The two lovely ladies didn't speak much English but they were savvy enough to be able to communicate with us clearly. Someday I will go back to Japan just to eat this...

The steaks were gorgeous, very tender, and full of flavour. The accompanying vegetables were fairly minimal. The service was friendly, albeit a tad inattentive.
